Mumbai Police on Saturday arrested the driver who had sped away after ramming a car into a female pedestrian nearly a month ago in suburban Goregaon, leaving her in a critical condition. “The driver Tejbahadur Giri (27), who had crashed the vehicle into a woman Rajmati Jain (45) on December 8 while she was crossing the road, and had escaped, was arrested after he confessed to the crime,” said SD Vadake, Senior Inspector at Goregaon police station.Giri had remained elusive after the horrific accident which was captured on CCTV. The news channels had extensively aired the footages. The victim continues to battle for her life since the accident occurred on SV Road in suburban Goregaon. The footage, retrieved from a CCTV installed at a mall nearby, shows Jain being flung in the air due to immense impact of the car’s knock. Far from stopping, the driver continued to drive rashly as she tossed in the air and fell on the bonnet. The Innova car dragged her for several feet before speeding away, leaving her in a pool of blood on the road. The registration number of the car was not clear in the blurred footage. The Goregaon police registered a case of rash and negligent driving against the unidentified driver. “A rickshaw driver, who was behind the car, had managed to note down the registration number and gave it to the security guard of the mall. However, RTO did not have the number registered,” Vadake said.”Hinging upon the available number, we began calling the car owners whose numbers have nearly matched with it. When we questioned a businessman on suspicion as his car suffered damages on its bonnet, he claimed that the car was driven by his driver on December 8 and the driver was alone in the car.Upon grilling, the driver confessed to the crime and we arrested him,” the officer said. “When the owner had asked Giri about the damage on the bonnet, the driver lied to him saying the vehicle had brushed with a lorry,” the officer added.
