The prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University has another case of sexual assault. An assistant professor has filed a case of rape against a PhD scholar, whom she was guiding with his research. The accused was a resident of nearby Munirka. The accused has been arrested and was presented at New Delhi’s Patiala House Court on Wednesday, and has now been sent to 14 days judicial custody. The case was filed at Vasant Kunj North police station, by the professor on February 23, under section 376 of the Indian Penal Code.According to the professor’s complaint, she and the accused got to know each other in September 2013, after which she had to turn down many proposals from his side. However, he later “forced established physical relationship” with her. Though she claims to have been “uncomfortable” and “confused” with this, he consoled her with promises of a marriage.Later, when she tried to press him for marriage he began to get angry and distant. Her complaint says that he was “harsh on me physically, as a result of which I suffered a medical complication.”Allegedly, he threatened to defame her in front of the entire university, which is why, she says, for long she couldn’t talk to anyone. When, she says, she tried to beg him to not do so, he ignored all communication from her side.Throughout the relationship, she claimed to have helped him financially and also in his PhD work.Though JNU has a mechanism in place to look at complaints of sexual abuse, a member of such a committee said that this case had not come to them, and they too were trying to ascertain the nature and facts of the case.
