A 24-year-old was killed on Monday and his friend critically injured when men in two cars opened fire on them near Qutub Minar in South Delhi.

The deceased has been identified as Sonu Sejwal, who worked in a five-star hotel in central Delhi, while his friend Sandeep is fighting for life at a city hospital, police said, adding both lived in nearby Lado Sarai.

The attack took place around 1.40 p.m. when Sonu and Sandeep, a property dealer in South Delhi, were having tea with friends.

“Some six to eight men arrived in two cars, opened fire and fled. Sonu and Sandeep, who sustained bullet injuries were rushed to AIIMS,” said a senior police officer.

Sonu, who was shot twice in the chest, was declared brought dead, while Sandeep was shot in the abdomen. Initial probe indicates that the attack took place over some financial matter. It could also have been a case of mistaken identity, sources said.

“Sandeep is property dealer and we are checking whether there was any monetary dispute with anyone”, said the officer.

A case under Sections 302 (murder), Arms Act and 307 (attempt to murder) of IPC was registered against unknown persons immediately at Mehrauli police station.

Sources also said one man has been detained for questioning.
