Most of the people detained have a criminal background, according to The Times of India. The report also said that there is still no official confirmation of the detentions in the case.

On the other hand, a DNA report said that the five arrested were not the men who were seen in a CCTV footage of the accused at the convent.

Police on Saturday had said they have obtained CCTV footage of four of the accused in the alleged gangrape.

Nadia Superintendent of Police Arnab Ghosh had told a press conference in Ranaghat that a study of the CCTV footage at the convent had shown them visuals of four persons who were allegedly involved in the crime. “We are now working on the lead received from the footage as we have got the description of the four persons,” he had said.

According to authorities of the local convent school in Ranaghat sub-division, the gang broke into the convent after 12:30 am and three-four of them raped the woman after gagging her.

The gang also decamped with Rs 12 lakh in the almirah locker after committing the crime.

The nun was taken to Ranaghat Hospital by the school hostel authorities on Saturday after the matter came to light.

Aggrieved guardians of students had blocked the arterial NH 34 and Sealdah-Ranaghat rail tracks from 12 noon as the news spread like wildfire in the locality.

Condemning the incident Education Minister Partha Chatterjee had said that the people will not tolerate this.

The culprits will be given strictest punishment, he said.

Describing it as an “attack on humanity”, Hakim had said that attempts were being made to inject religious fanaticism. “The culprits have to be identified and arrested immediately and given exemplary punishment,” he said.

District Magistrate PB Salim, who had rushed to the spot, had told PTI it was a heinous act and police were already on the lookout for the gang members.
