Prime minister Narendra Modi ridiculed the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) at his rally on Tuesday, mixing election rhetoric and tongue-in-cheek remarks about the controversy surrounding alleged bogus funding to the party. In his 30-minute long speech in Rohini, north-west Delhi, PM Modi did not waste much time before coming down heavily on AAP, calling them “untrustworthy, backstabbers and shameless.””They (AAP) branded BJP and Congress as corrupt. But shameless as they are, they took the same Congress’ support to form a government last year.” He added, “These people (AAP) who move around with a list of Swiss bank account holders, are now saying we don’t know who donated us money.”PM Modi was referring to allegations of AAP Volunteers’ Action Manch that companies funding AAP were converting black money into white. The PM even went on to bracket former PM Rajiv Gandhi with AAP. “Even Rajiv Gandhi, who projected himself as Mr Clean faced problems as he faced corruption charges later,” the PM said.Modi continued his tirade against AAP, calling them a ‘temporary party’, mocking their 49-day government last year. Congress ruined Delhi over 15 years of their rule. Since it is a big party, over a century old, they could ruin the city for 15 years. Then came AAP, a party that was much smaller in strength, hence they could ruin the city only for a year. Now it is incumbent upon us to pull out Delhi from 16 years of ruin,” said Modi.As a chunk of the crowd at the rally were labourers and farmers from on the Delhi-Haryana border, PM Modi sought to justify and play up the ordinances on e-rickshaws and land bill.”There are many villages on Delhi’s outskirts and we want to give you good roads, good hospitals, schools, jobs and sanitation. But none of this would be possible without land. I promise you, that your land would be used for the right purposes,” Modi said. The PM concluded his speech, elucidating BJP’s plans for rooftop solar power generation, “I want to encourage those who have ample roof space, to use it for solar power generation. The government will buy power from you, it create clean energy for your household and will also benefit you monetarily.”
