At a time when Bollywood joined the intolerance debate, some people associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) are organising a film festival revolving around the themes of family ethos, socio-cultural issues and nationalism. The “Chitrabharati Film Festival” for documentary, animation, short and campus films (made by students) is being organised in Indore from February 26 to 28, in what is the first such exercise.”In an attempt to create awareness in society on issues like socio-cultural issues, moral values, family ethos and environment we thought we could provide a good platform to young directors working on these issues,”said RSS’ Praveen Kabra, Prant Prachar Pramukh, Malwa region, who is the director of the Film Festival.<!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>However, when asked about the intolerance issue on which comments of Bollywood stars like Aamir Khan and Shahrukh Khan had sparked off a row, he said “we would like to stay away from this controversy. Our focus is on family system and cultural issues.” The RSS, the BJP’s ideological mentor, had been critical of film-makers and others returning awards in protest against “growing intolerance”.Though he said the list of films to be screened at the festival was yet to be finalised, these would be selected from among those made in 2013 and 2014. The University of Indore Devi Ahilya Vishvavidyala was the co-organiser of the festival. The organisers are trying to rope in Bollywood personalities like Anupam Kher, Rajpal Yadav and Raghubir Yadav to attend the festival. Besides the competetive section, there will be an open forum with film-makers during the festival.Kabra said he and some of his associates involved in organising the festival were not from the RSS had planned on holding the festival last year but due to some preoccupation had to put it off. “Indore is a business hub and is now becoming an education hub. We wanted to encourage film-making here to make it a centre for film production,” he said. Ahead of the festival, a one-day workshop titled “Appreciation of Film” is being held on January 16 on various aspects of film production. However, the festival would be confined to short and documentary films and not include feature films.
