BJP loses 7 out of 10 urban bodies to the Congress in Chattisgarh

In nagar panchayats, Congress’ Foharabai Meri won from Maro, Mausam Jaya from Konta and Kameshwar Gautam from Bhopalpatanam. BJP won from only three nagar panchayats of Bhairmgarh (Bijapur district), Narharpur (Kanker) and Premnagar (Surajpur) with Dasrath Sarbuliya, Bhopesh Netam and Dularbai Shandilya defeating their rivals on these seats, respectively. The party has won 88 out of 121 wards in ten urban bodies (as counting of votes is underway in Bhilai), followed by the Congress (62) and independents (21). The victory came as a relief for the Congress which lost the Mayoral post to the BJP in Birgaon municipal corporation poll held last month.

Karti Chidambaram responds to DMK chief M Karunanidhi’s call for alliance with Congress

How do you think the Congress will fare at the polls?
I think it all depends on the electoral formation. We cannot make any predictions today without knowing who is on which side, how many formations are there and the relative strength of the formation. I think Bihar has clearly shown us that electoral arithmetic works and consistently Tamil Nadu has shown that larger alliances have a clear edge over other formations. If you read the papers today, my information is as good as ours. Everybody is keeping their options open so we need to see how the alliances form.

Gujarat: Botched up cataract surgeries leave 12 without sight

A team led by Dr Rupali Mehta, regional deputy director health-Rajkot and leading ophthalmologist, was asked to investigate the matter on behalf of the government. “Our reports show that 12 people have been contracted endophthalmitis. The cause of infection based on the Operation Theatre (OT) culture report is bacteria and fungus found in the environment of the OT. This happens due to improper sterilisation of the area. However, no organism was found in the instrument fluid. We have done the panchnama and sealed the OT of the hospital,” Dr Mehta told dna on Monday. Will they see again? No answer
Dr Mehta expressed concern over return of vision for those who have lost it. “Currently all the patients have perception of vision, which means if someone puts the light on, they can see it, but no figures. This has happened because of spread of infection,” she said.
“A team of expert doctors from MNJ Hospital, Ahmedabad, will visit the city on Tuesday to assess the situation further. It will issue an advisory to both the hospital and the surgeon,” she added. She confirmed that the patients were referred to the retinal surgeon at the Rajkot Medical college on Monday. “If required, they will be sent to MNJ hospital and the entire expense of the treatment will be borne by the government,” Dr Mehta added. The hospital
Sadhu Vaswani is a trust hospital. Between January and December 2015, it has conducted 273 eye operations with an average of 25 to 30 operations a month. However, on December 23 alone, it conducted 25 operations. All the patients had been advised the surgery at a camp conducted on December 19 by the hospital. The doc who did it
Dr Hetal Bakhai who first conducted the operations runs a private hospital and also provides services at Sadhu Vaswani hospital. In past 10 years, he has conducted over 40,000 eye surgeries. What the doctors say
“The OT was sterilised yet bacteria was found which infected 12 patients. Topical cataract surgery was performed on all the 25 patients (surgery done without injection). Lower immunity and age factor are behind 12 people getting infected. Two of them, Gyaniben and Ibrahim Habib, might never get their vision back. There are fair chances for the rest to be able to see again.”
— Dr Hetal Bakhai, who first conducted the operations”I conducted the second surgery of eight of the infected patients and I am very positive that they will most likely get their eyesight back. However, that will take around a month and a half. The patients were referred to me by the hospital. When they approached me, their eyes were swollen and there was lot of inflammation in the eyes due to turbid fluid. As a retinal surgeon, my job was to clean the infection.” —Dr Milan Thakkar, who conducted the second round of operationsNames of the patients who lost their vision

But none of us was issued any receipt by Dr. Thakkar,” —Ramnik Damani”We were also told by Dr Thakkar that he would remove the infection but would not guarantee return of visibility. We were also made to sign papers on that,” another patient

Indo-Pak ties: Brace for more Modi coups; two PMs have many meetings lined up in 2016

Pakistan’s recent appointment of a former army general, Naseer Khan Janjua, as its national security adviser, has also opened a fresh window for early negotiations on terrorism and cross-border violence. “That the Pakistan NSA represents the views of his military establishment is good because the shadow-boxing is over,” said former Indian high commissioner to Pakistan G Parthasarathy. The “mother of all coups” – Ambassador M K Bhadrakumar described Modi’s December 25 visit to Lahore – also had an important fall-out.Modi’s optics have succeeded in convincing Pakistani leaders once again that a hardline BJP was more decisive than the Congress.Congress prime ministers, right from Rajiv Gandhi to Narasimha Rao to Manmohan Singh, despite having agreed to settle issues like Siachen and Jammu and Kashmir, backed out because of indecision.Ministry of External Affairs officials concede that what Modi had achieved was something Manmohan had dreamt of for a decade, but was not allowed by his own party – the Congress.

“Any party or group that stands in the way of attempts to achieve peace are enemies of the people of South Asia. The leadership in India and Pakistan should invite and involve all the stakeholders – especially the people of Kashmir – to contribute and be a part of this process. The rabble-rousers should be reined in so that issues can be addressed and peace becomes the order of the day in the South Asian region,” he said.

About a year back, a suggestion to build a new Parliament was reportedly made at a meeting of Budget Committee of Parliament including Deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha M Thambidurai, Public Accounts Committee Chairman K V Thomas and Estimates Committee Chairman Murli Manohar Joshi. Thomas had said that the existing building was “old” and a new Parliament building should be thought of as provision needed to be made for the next 100 years.

Rahul Gandhi needs to speak up more in Parliament: Ashok Chavan

An explanation as to why the Congress opposes certain moves will connect him directly to the people, he said. “While Sonia ji (Congress President Sonia Gandhi) prefers to meticulously plan her rally speeches as she is not very comfortable in Hindi, Rahul ji tends to take it little lightly because he is well versed with the language. This, at times, proves to be a lacunae which can be changed,” he said. He added people now tend to watch serious live debates of the Parliament and that Gandhi needs to ensure they understand the reasons behind the Congress party’s stand on various issues.
