RSS pracharaks as BJP’s state unit chiefs – exceptions or new trend?

A party leader said earlier RSS pracharaks came to the BJP generally as organisational secretaries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was one of the first pracharaks to hold a government post as chief minister and Kushabhau Thakre, also a pracharak, was party president. From 2004, more pracharaks entered the party fold. Once a pracharak joins the party, he has to give up the “veya patra” or statement of expenditure, as advance money is given to pracharaks for monthly expenditures.

Arrested IAF official was honey-trapped by spy in guise of British journo

Ranjith KK, the 30-year-old Indian Air Force official who was dismissed from service and arrested from an airbase in Punjab earlier this week, had allegedly passed on official secrets to a suspected intelligence operative.According to Delhi police crime branch, the official had been compromised after falling prey to a honey trap set up by the suspected operative, Damini McNought, who posed as a journalist on Facebook. The arrest, made during a combined operation by Delhi police, military intelligence and Air Force liaisoning unit (LU), is being considered another major breakthrough after an ISI-backed espionage network was busted in Jammu and Kashmir earlier this month.Ranjith was posted in Bhatinda as an LAC (Leading Air Craftsman) before being dismissed on Monday. Bhatinda serves as a front line airbase near Pakistan border and has a very important surveillance unit, according to the officials. He is married and has a kid as well, said police.”The accused joined IAF in 2010 and has served in other states as well. He was booked under official secrets act and produced in a city court which sent him to four-day police custody,” said Ravindra Yadav, joint commissioner of Delhi police (Crime).Investigators told dna that Ranjith was contacted by Damini on Facebook nearly a year ago. Damini told Ranjith that she was working for a leading British magazine as a war correspondent and needed his help for a story she was working on.”The suspect offered to transfer money into a bank account under Ranjith’s name. We are looking into recent transactions made towards that account,” said a senior police official. In exchange, Ranjith sent official secrets that included Air Force deployments, exercises and troop movements, he added.Sources told dna that Rs30,000 transferred into the account of Ranjith from a foreign bank had tipped off the intelligence agencies. “Air Force had kept him under surveillance for nearly three months. He had passed on critical sensitive information including air field markings through VOIP calls,” said the source. The accused has disclosed that the alleged spy has a British accent, which was apparent in their conversations during later phase of their relationship, interrogators said.Ranjith’s relationship with the suspected operative took a turn after the duo cosied up to each other. By this time Ranjith had been frequently talking to the suspected spy over WhatsApp and Viber.”We cannot delve into the exact nature of the conversation. But it is believed that the alleged Intel operative had begun to blackmail the accused, threatening to publish the content he had sent her on social media,” an investigator told dna.Delhi police are now trying to pinpoint the location of Damini. Her Facebook profile shows Leeds, United Kingdom as present address and has some others with military background too in friends’ list. The Crime Branch had earlier busted a major espionage network involving officials of the armed forces. Five persons were arrested including personnel of Border Security Force and Rashtriya Rifles. With a second espionage case coming to fore, the Crime Branch is not ruling out the possibility of multiple espionage networks in Indian armed forces.<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>

NDA government’s nickname is flipflop: Salman Khurshid

Former External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid on Saturday took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his surprise stop over in Pakistan, saying “flipflop” could be the nickname of his government and wondered what had happened of late that he took such a leap of faith.Another Congress leader Manish Tewari taunted the government, saying if Pakistan had agreed to return those parts of Kashmir which are illegally occupied by it.He alleged that some private business interest played a role in the visit as he claimed that a steel magnate was involved as a “go-between” for the two prime ministers.”Has something changed dramatically over the last four weeks that gave him (Modi) this window? Or has he taken a leap of faith that despite everything being negative he felt he wants to give it a chance. Flipflop could be a nickname for the NDA government. They do flipflop everyday,” Khurshid said.Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar also criticised the government and sought to know what had happened since the Modi government had put some conditions for talks that the prime minister changed his mind. He suggested that Modi was “pressurised” by world leaders like Barack Obama, David Cameron and Francois Hollande whom he had met recently. <!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>

Diplomats hail move but with caution

Sumitra Kumar, senior research fellow at the premier strategic think-tank – Institute of Defence Studies and Analysis (IDSA) — however, is apprehensive about Nawaz Sharif’s manoeuvrability with regard to terror elements given that the Punjab provincial government has over the last few years been allocating considerable funds in its annual budget for the Jamaat ud Dawa. “Even faced with the improbability of making much headway on terrorism and Kashmir in the resumed dialogue, it is still important for India to engage with Pakistan. If India hopes to be taken seriously by the international community it should be seen to be managing its relationships with the neighbours earnestly,” Kumar said. Also, continuing the dialogue might tend to weaken the anti-India elements in Pakistan, he said. Besides, the experience of the last 18 months during which the dialogue was interrupted twice has brought both governments to the view that if any forward movement has to be made in improving relations they can only resort to a dialogue and nothing else,” said Kumar, an expert on Pakistan and military affairs.

US welcomes Modi-Sharif meeting in Pakistan

“Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a surprise visit to Pakistan on Friday — a significant sign the icy relationship between the two neighbours is thawing,” it said. The Washington Post said Modi has “pressed the reset button on the blow-hot-blow-cold relationship” between the two nuclear-armed neighbours, paving the way for official dialogue to resume next month. The Chicago Tribune reported: “The previously unannounced visit is a potential sign of thawing relations between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.”

Why PM Narendra Modi’s ‘impromptu’ Pakistan visit is significant

Can PM Modi follow a similar route in other key areas and stay two steps ahead of his contemporaries, the media and the opposition. It can truly help him to set the agenda of development and firm up a legacy, which not only his cheerleaders but many dispassionate observers would sorely like him to achieve.

PM Modi, Jaitley victims of political intolerance: Ramdev

“Political intolerance” is at its peak in the country and the selective criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley by certain quarters is the fallout of this trend, Yoga guru Baba Ramdev has said.”Political intolerance is at its peak in the country. Therefore, someone is criticising Modi and some other Jaitley and the BJP,” Ramdev told reporters last night after taking part in a book release function. The book “Dev se Mahadev” was written by Akash, son of BJP general secretary Kailash Vijaywargiya. Ramdev also dismissed that religious tolerance has been on rise in the country.”I have not seen religious intolerance even once. On the contrary, nearly 125 crore people of this country, including me, have become victims of political intolerance,” he said. Ramdev also took a swipe at the Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi in connection with the National Herald issue.”Sonia Gandhi had launched thousands of cases against me during the tenure of the Congress-led UPA government, but I faced them all. Sonia and Rahul should face at least one investigation,” he said.Terming Lord Ram as the “soul of India and the national pride”, Ramdev said the issue of construction of Lord Ram’s temple in Ayodhya should not be politicised because it is attached to the faith of people.
Ramdev parried the query on whether parties involved in the issue of construction of the temple should make efforts to arrive at consensus instead of continued litigation.”Will court decide where Lord Ram was born. Entire India and world know that Lord Ram was born in Ayodhya and therefore the temple should be constructed in Ayodhya only,” he said. Responding to a query, Ramdev said that people of the country should have faith in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s poll promise to repatriate black money stashed abroad. <!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>

Congress remarks on PM Modi’s Lahore visit unfortunate, BJP hits back

BJP on Friday hit back at Congress over its suggestions that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Pakistan was “pre-arranged” at an industrialist’s initiative, and said it was “unfortunate” that the country has an opposition like it which sees negative in all “positive efforts”.Welcoming Modi’s visit which has taken the country by “pleasant surprise”, BJP said the Prime Minister has taken a bold step and only a strong leader like Modi can do so.”Such an allegation by Congress is absolutely incorrect and in bad taste. This is unfortunate that the country has an opposition like this today. People have hopes from Modi and he has in a short span of time brought about a paradigm shift in India’s relationship with the outside world,” party secretary Shrikant Sharma said.Modi decided to go to Lahore after his Pakistani counterpart extended an invitation to him which he accepted, Sharma said. Calling it an “out of box” initiative, Sharma said Modi had been taking such steps and cited his decision to invite the head of governments of the SAARC countries and his meeting with Sharif in Paris recently. He recalled that BJP stalwart and the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had also taken a similar exercise with his Lahore bus journey. Modi has been of the view that there should be easy and informal relations among SAARC countries like what exist between the EU and ASEAN nations, he said, adding that this is besides the conventional diplomacy.Sharma also cited Modi’s initiative in building an alliance of Solar energy-rich countries at Paris climate change conference to buttress his point. Congress leader Anand Sharma criticising Modi’s visit said, the meeting between Modi and Sharif was “pre-arranged” by a businessman. <!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>

JD(U) ‘shocked’ by PM Modi’s surprise visit to Pakistan

The ties between India and Pakistan have witnessed some positive developments, however, after a chill of several months. The two countries recently decided to launch a comprehensive dialogue after Modi and Sharif met in Paris recently. But Tyagi said in the wake of Modi’s surprise move that “nothing is going to improve unless the leaders of Pakistan change their mindset. Pakistan should know that friendship with India on one hand and betrayal on the other cannot go together.”

Applications for majority of services like birth or death certificates will soon be simplified and converted into one-page form format, the government announced on Friday. Union Minister Jitendra Singh also unveiled a single-page application form for pensioners on a day being observed as ‘good governance day’ which coincides with the birthday of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. “For different schemes you have voluminous forms. Today, we are releasing one-page application form for pensioners. We plan to convert all multi-page or voluminous forms to single-page within a year,” he told reporters during a press conference here. PM Narendra Modi

The Congress has slammed PM Narendra Modi for announcing an unexpected visit to Lahore, Pakistan to meet PM Nawaz Sharif. While the city Congress on Thursday claimed that government increased the amount of compensation for the victims of December 7 fire at Damunagar slum in suburban Kandivali due to the party’s agitation, NCP termed the aid as a joke. Mumbai Congress president Sanjay Nirupam said the party workers’ relay hunger strike forced the state government to hike the compensation from Rs 3,800 to Rs 25,000 per family. In a statement, Nirupam said the devastating fire had rendered over 2,000 families homeless, but no BJP or Shiv Sena leader bothered to visit them. The relay hunger strike by Congress forced the government to increase the compensation to Rs 25,000 per family, he claimed, adding that the government also agreed to probe the cause of the fire and accepted Congress’s demand for rehabilitating the victims on the same site or nearby. <!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>The government should waive school fees of the children from affected families, he said. Ahir demanded Rs five lakh to the kin of the deceased, Rs 1 lakh to the injured, Rs 50,000 to the affected families and permanent houses for them. Congress-NCP regime had rehabilitated the affected slum dwellers of Nargis Dutt Nagar in Bandra on the same site, he claimed.
