With Parliament paralysed, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday launched a blistering attack on the Congress saying its only programme is to “destroy” the country because it cannot reconcile to defeat in the Lok Sabha polls.”Disrupt, Destruct and Demolish” is now the Congress slogan brushing aside President Pranab Mukherjee’s counsel for debate, dissent and decision for Parliament to function, he said in his broadside, a fortnight after he reached out to them in a bid to sort out differences over the GST bill.<!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>”Those who have been defeated and sent home are saying now that we have been destroyed we will destroy you (ruling side) too, whatever happens to the country. We will not let Parliament run,” he said in an obvious reference to the Congress’s stalling tactics, especially in the Rajya Sabha, without naming the main opposition party.”They have made a joke of Parliament’s functioning,” he said addressing a gathering at a function organised by Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam (SNDP), an outfit of the backward ezhava Community whose votes the BJP is hoping to woo in the Assembly elections in the state due early next year. The event was marred by a controversy with Chief Minister Oommen Chandy being told to stay away after being invited at the instance of SNDP yogam chief Vellapalli Natesan who received the prime minister. On the occasion, Modi unveiled a statue of former chief minister R Sankar, who hailed from the ezhava community and belonged to the Congress. Modi recalled President Mukherjee’s speech in Kolkata on Sunday where he said there are three D’s through which Parliament functions and these are debate, dissent and decision. In an apparent reference to Congress citing Mukherjee’s remarks on intolerance, he said the Congress has the habit of quoting him every now and then and “run it for 15 days” but they are not ready to take note of what he had said in Kolkata.”They have eaten the 3 Ds. They like only one D which is destruct–that is disrupt, destruct, demolish. They have only this D. They have forgotten President’s three Ds,” Modi said.”Our path is the 3 Ds shown by the President and the 4th D for us is development,” he said, amidst cheers by the assembled audience.

Back in 2012, the Jammu and Kashmir Police was left rattled after a similar busting of a militant module that was responsible for 13 attacks that Srinagar had witnessed between 2011-12, including killings of atleast four police officials and one National Conference activist .

The busting of a major espionage network involving a BSF personnel and a librarian from Rajouri area of Jammu and Kashmir, has uncovered an alleged nexus between Pakistan’s premier intelligence agencies, members of the Indian armed forces and the J&K police. Crime Branch officials told dna that the arrests might be a part of a nation wide exercise to sanitise security forces across country from suspected espionage networks. This however is not the first time when such a network has come to light since an armed insurgency against the Indian state erupted in the valley in 1989.<!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Back in 2012, the Jammu and Kashmir Police was left rattled after a similar busting of a militant module that was responsible for 13 attacks that Srinagar had witnessed between 2011-12, including killings of atleast four police officials and one National Conference activist . The arrested men included a policeman, named Abdul Rashid Shigan, and a released Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) militant, Imtiyaz Ahmad Gojri who were operating under the shadow name of Omar Mukhtar and General Usman. However, what makes the current bust even more important is the fact that the Crime Branch of Delhi police believes that the arrested librarian, identified as Kaifaitullah Khan, had managed to penetrate not only the security agencies but also the Indian Armed forces. He had also roped in his cousin Abdul Rasheed who is accused of directly sending secret information relating to army deployment to ISI agents. While J&K Director General of Police (DGP), K. Rajendra Kumar maintained that the security forces in the state, including JK police, are ‘professionals’ curbing terrorist activities on daily basis, Dr Ajit Kumar Singh, of the South Asia terrorism portal, said the phenomenon of providing state secrets to Pakistani intelligence needs to be curbed immediately with better selection ,training and recruitment procedures of the Indian armed forced as well as the J&K police.Kaifaitullah during his interrogation disclosed that in 1992, he was selected in BSF but he did not join the service. In 1993, he got selected in J&K police and after completing the training, he was posted in J&K armed police till 1995 after which he got job as Library Assistant in in a Higher Secondary School in Manjakot, Rajouri. The Crime Branch maintains that Kaifaitullah had begun his operation to penetrate the Indian army only 2-3 years back, but given his history, it is unlikely he was dormant from 1995, the year he joined militancy. This could well mean that he has served as an ISI handler for over 20 years even after being arrested by the state police on several occasions. Singh attributes this to botched up investigation into terror acts which according to him is detrimental to the cause of fighting terrorism. His research titled ‘J&K Police, The enemy within’ also documents one such botch up during the investigation of 26/11 attacks of Mumbai. “When Mukhtar Ahmad Sheikh (arrested on June 16, 2012) was detained by the Kolkata (West Bengal) Police in December 2008 in the aftermath of November 26, 2008 (26/11) Mumbai attacks for supplying SIM cards to Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants, the cases against him were dropped after the J&K Police informed their Kolkata counterparts that he was an undercover agent, and was trying to infiltrate into the terror group”, reads his research paper.”According to the data compiled by the Institute for Conflict Management, a total of 21 Policemen were arrested for their links with militants since 1990. While there were only three such arrests till 2009, 2010 alone witnessed four arrests and it increased to seven in 2011. The current year has already witnessed seven such arrests. Apart from these Policemen, four Army personnel and a Central Reserve Police Force trooper have also been arrested since 1990,” the paper reads.”We will have to look into his records. The case indeed is very alarming,” said a senior official of the JK police.

Indian gold demand seen falling to eight-year low in festive quarter | Reuters

MUMBAI India’s gold buying in the key December quarter is likely to fall to the lowest level in eight years, hurt by poor investment demand and back-to-back droughts that have slashed earnings for the country’s millions of farmers.

The sluggish demand could halve imports by the world’s second-biggest gold consumer in U.S. dollar terms in the final quarter, a retailer and two bank dealers said, putting further pressure on global prices that hit a five-year low earlier this month.

December quarter demand could fall to 150 to 175 tonnes, said Bachhraj Bamalwa, a director with the All India Gems & Jewellery Trade Federation, from 201.6 tonnes a year ago and a five-year average for the quarter of 231 tonnes, according to World Gold Council data.

The December quarter usually accounts for about a third of India’s gold sales as it takes in the start of the wedding season as well as festivals like Dhanteras and Diwali, when buying gold is considered auspicious.

Two-thirds of demand comes from rural areas, where jewellery is a traditional store of wealth, but weak monsoon rainfall this year due to an El Nino weather pattern has eroded farmers earnings and their purchasing capacity.

“I incurred huge losses this year as my corn and cotton crops were wilted due to drought,” said Madhukar Patil, a farmer in the western state of Maharashtra, who had been planning to buy gold during Diwali.

A weak rupee has also kept local gold prices relatively strong compared with a slump in U.S. dollar-denominated gold, further denting demand, while investment buying has stalled as investors see little chance of a quick price recovery.

“In the first half of November demand was good due to Diwali, but since then demand has significantly moderated,” said Harshad Ajmera, proprietor of JJ Gold House, a wholesale in the eastern Indian city of Kolkata.

The Indian rupee has fallen over 5 percent this year, restricting the drop in local gold prices to 5.5 percent, compared with a 9.3 percent drop in U.S. dollar denominated gold.

India’s gold imports, which account for nearly all of its demand for the precious metal, could fall to around $5.7 billion in the December quarter, the Federation’s Bamalwa said. Two gold dealers forecast a similar fall.

Sluggish demand has been reflected in physical trading in India as bullion was offered at a discount even during Dhanteras, compared with a premium of $18 an ounce over London prices last year.

“Jewellers from rural areas are making fewer purchases. Their sales have been badly affected due to drought,” said a Mumbai-based bank dealer with a gold importing bank.

BrahMos missile test-fired from Indian Navy’s stealth destroyer INS Kochi, hits target

New Delhi: Supersonic cruise missile BrahMos, with a strike-range of over 290 kms, was test-fired from the navy’s newest stealth destroyer INS Kochi successfully hitting a decommissioned target ship in the Arabian Sea.

The second of Project 15A ‘Kolkata-class’ guided missile destroyers test-fired the advanced missile system as part of ‘Acceptance Test Firing’ during a naval drill being conducted along the country’s west coast.

The world’s fastest cruise missile, after performing high-level and extremely complex manoeuvres, successfully hit decommissioned target ship ‘Alleppey’ located at a distance covering nearly the full range of the missile with high precision, defence officials said.

“After two successful test trials from INS Kolkata in June 2014 and February 2015, today’s test firing from INS Kochi has validated the newly commissioned ship’s systems.

“BrahMos as the prime strike weapon will ensure the warship’s invincibility by engaging naval surface targets at long ranges, thus making the destroyer another lethal platform of Indian Navy,” Sudhir Mishra, CEO and MD of BrahMos Aerospace said.

The navy commissioned INS Kochi on September 30, this year. The 7,500-ton indigenously developed warship incorporates new design concepts for improved survivability, stealth, sea-keeping and manoeuvrability.

The warship has the advanced capability of carrying a total of 16 BrahMos missiles in two 8-cell vertical launch systems, besides other sophisticated weapons and sensors.

BrahMos missile having supersonic speed of Mach 2.8, a very low-cruising altitude of 10 metres at terminal phase and pin-point accuracy, will make the warship one of the deadliest in the Indian Navy fleet, the officials said.

The two-stage BrahMos missile has been jointly developed by India and Russia. It has been in service with the Indian Navy since 2005.

Sunday’s launch was the 49th test-firing of the missile.

Transgender Durga puja in police hurdle; clearance awaited a day before the inauguration

While several IPS officers at Lalbazar – Kolkata Police headquarters refused to comment on the issue, they said that they are still processing the clearance.

With just a day to go for the transgender Durga idol to see the light of the day, police clearance is still awaited. The transgender Durga puja committee is stuck in police hurdle with the inaugural function just a day away. While several IPS officers at Lalbazar – Kolkata Police headquarters refused to comment on the issue, they said that they are still processing the clearance. Deputy Commissioner of Kolkata Police (North Division) Subhankar Sinha Sarkar did not answer calls from dna. “We have not given them a written permission. But, they have given us a verbal consent instead of giving us anything in writing. Still, we have gone ahead without the police clearance and made all the necessary arrangements,” said Bhanu Naskar, secretary, Pratyay Gender Trust, adding, “We faced opposition right in our family – our own community. If that wasn’t enough, we were troubled by the locals, where the pandal was being built. We hope we will be able to inaugurate the puja successfully tomorrow, fighting all odds.”In a first, Pratyay Gender Trust in association with the Dyami Yubak Brinda Durga Puja are all set to showcase transgender Durga idol, breaking all stereotypes. The idol is in the Ardhanarishvar form – half Shiv and half Parvati. Organisers claim that this is for the first time not just in Kolkata but in the world. All the expenses of the puja, budgeted at Rs 1.5 lakhs has been borne by the members of Pratyay.

This time Kolkata will have a Durga Puja arranged by transgender with an Ardhanarishvar idol

Pandals mushroom across Kolkata every year on the occasion of Durga Puja, each year each locality has a different decor and a different theme. The decors of some these pandals are inspired by several factors including current affairs, social issues and even Bollywood. But this year, the Udyami Yubak Brinda Durga Puja is doing something that will make history.

The Huffington Post reports that with the help of the Pratyay Gender Trust, a local transgender collective, this Durga Puja pandal will have India’s first transgender Durga idol.

This was with the help of about twelve transgender women who are part of the trust. The idol will be fashioned after the Ardhanarishvar or half Shiv half Parvati. However, this came about after several protest from members of the community. But at they end of the day the trust made it happen.

Anindya Hajra, one of Pratyay’s founder members told The Huffington Post, “We are conscious how sites of worship and associated rituals have Brahminical associations and often act as a site of misogyny, prejudice and violence. Ours is an attempt to question these practices and caste/ class structures and to cross gender lines.”

Earlier IANS had reported that spurred by the discriminatory gaze they are subjected to during pandal visits, the transgender community have taken matters into their own hands.

All the arrangements of the puja, which was budgeted at Rs 1.5 lakhs too was arranged by members of Pratyay.

Another member of the trust told IANS, “Whenever we visit pandals, we are seen in a derogatory way. We are trying to end this discrimination and create scope for conversation between communities where we and our families live. Everyone is welcome to visit our pandal.”

A performance by troupe of a senior transgender artist will inaugurate the puja on 18 October.

With Muslim population rising in West Bengal, RSS says branches may double in state

As a teenager, Uttam Shaha says he used to watch scornfully from his bedroom window as men in brown shorts performed martial exercises in a car park below. Like many Indians then, he viewed the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) as a fringe group.

Now 43, Shaha is a recent RSS recruit in Kolkata. He joined about 50 volunteers for an indoctrination meeting last year at that same car park near RSS headquarters in Kolkata. As dusk set in, they sat cross-legged on a faded rug before a statue of Bharat Mata, a representation of India in the form of a mother goddess.

Ramapada Pal, the RSS’s chief preacher in the state, espoused a message of Hindu supremacy. Everyone must acknowledge “the superiority of the Hindu kingdom,” he said.

“If a Muslim living in India chooses their god before India, then why should he be allowed to live in our country? This country belongs to Hindus first.”

The RSS says its membership is growing. RSS Joint General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale predicted the number of RSS branches in West Bengal would rise to 1,200 next year from 650 in 2013. There is no independent measure of RSS membership.

The group’s message has particular resonance in West Bengal, which borders Bangladesh. An influx of Bangladeshi immigrants has boosted the number of Muslims, who now make up 27 per cent of the population in West Bengal, an interior ministry official said. Hindus remain a majority, but their share of the population declined by 2.2 percentage points between the 2001 and 2011 census.

‘FEASTING ON OUR RESOURCES’

Rahul Sinha, the BJP’s head in the state, said the RSS was the “guiding force in a war to win the ancient Hindu soul of India.”

“Muslims are coming from Bangladesh and feasting on our resources,” he said. “New mosques and madrassas have been set up in every corner.”

Shaha, the new RSS recruit, said he turned to the RSS last July after his niece married a Muslim and converted to Islam, shaming his well-to-do family. “I had to protect my Hindu roots – they had been threatened,” he said.

The RSS talked to him about reconverting his niece, but Shaha said the move was blocked when she threatened to lodge a police complaint against her family if they tried to interfere in her personal life.

Shaha said he campaigned for the BJP in the municipal elections this year and was ready to do the same for the party in next year’s state election.

“My mission is to make India a Hindu nation,” he said.

Centre to unveil National Minimum Wage Act in the coming months

Kolkata: The Centre will soon come up with a National Minimum Wage Act which all the state governments are required to implement, Union Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya said here.

Employees sew clothes at a garment factory in New DelhiEmployees sew clothes at a garment factory in New DelhiSpeaking on the sidelines of the CII’s national council meeting, Dattatreya said, “Minimum wage has to be fixed by the state government but we want a National Minimum Wage Act.

We want enactment of a Law. It will be statutory and every state has to implement that minimum wage.”

The Minister said that the “formula” on the wages was ready and it would come out “shortly”.

“Now we are making a formula and we are ready to go within one or two months and we will declare what will be the minimum wage at the national level and accordingly all state governments have to implement it,” Dattatreya added.

In fact, discussions with the state governments and the trade unions regarding the matter have already been completed, the minister said.

“Already we have discussed the matter with state as well as the trade unions… And the trade unions are asking Rs 15,000 (as the minimum wage).”

Incidentally, the minimum wage floor currently is Rs 160, which was hiked from Rs 137 by the Centre this July.

Stating that by the end of this financial year, the Centre would recruit around one crore people, the minister said that the Centre was planning to bring out four major
codes reforming the Labour Laws.

“There are 44 Labour Laws. We wanted to go in for four major codes because the Laws were made 50 years ago. And to tune with today’s situation reforms are necessary for the simplification, rationalisation and to avoid the compulsion process we are planning to bring out four codes,” he said.

The codes would be on wages, on industrial relation, on social security and on the working condition and safety, Dattatreya said, adding that all the 44 Labour Laws would come in the four codes.

“We want to amalgamate the four wage Acts (Minimum Wages Act 1948, the payment of wages Act 1936, Payment of bonus act 1965 and equal remuneration Act 1975) into the Labour code on Wages,” he stated.

The Centre was also planning to increase the wages of the labourers from 15 days to 45 days in case of a lock-out in a factory, the minister said.

‘FEASTING ON OUR RESOURCES’ Rahul Sinha, the BJP’s head in the state, said the RSS was the “guiding force in a war to win the ancient Hindu soul of India.” “Muslims are coming from Bangladesh and feasting on our resources,” he said. “New mosques and madrassas have been set up in every corner”. Saha, the new RSS recruit, said he turned to the RSS last July after his niece married a Muslim and converted to Islam, shaming his well-to-do family. “I had to protect my Hindu roots – they had been threatened,” he sid. The RSS talked to him about reconverting his niece, but Saha said the move was blocked when she threatened to lodge a police complaint against her family if they tried to interfere in her personal life. Saha said he campaigned for the BJP in the municipal elections this year and was ready to do the same for the party in next year’s state election. “My mission is to make India a Hindu nation,” he said.

The Trinamool Congress on Saturday trounced the Left Front in three municipal poll results amid allegations of widespread rigging and terror. In the eastern fringes of Kolkata, the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation registered an emphatic win for the green brigade and dealt a severe blow to the Left Front’s bid to come back to political competitiveness with Mamata Banerjee and her party. The ruling party won 37 seats of the total 41 seats in Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation. Two seats each were won by the Left Front and the Congress.<!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>However, the opposition parties smelt a rat and said that the Trinamool Congress’ victory was nothing but an abuse of power by the administrative machinery to muffle the recently revived Left Front morale.“This is not a reflection of the people mandate rather an evidence of the electoral malpractices indulged in by the ruling party,” said Asim Dasgupta, mayoral candidate of the Left Front, who lost among other Left candidates. The Trinamool Congress leadership rubbished allegations saying that the developmental activities were giving good results and that the opposition parties have no popular support as a result of which are crying foul.“The civil society and people at large have reposed their faith on Trinamool in the civic polls. People have democratically rejected the politics of disruption, violence and bandhs. They have voted for development. People have witnessed widespread development in the last four years. Support for Mamata Banerjee is surging,” said Partha Chatterjee, secretary general, Trinamool Congress. In Bally, it was a clean sweep by Trinamool Congress winning all the 16 seats. Bally was a Left fortress till few years back, but they could not bag any seats in the polls. The scene at Asansol was no different. Trinamool Congress came out with a winning streak after bagging 75 seats out of 106.

Israeli companies will invest in India when stage is set right, says ambassador Daniel Carmon

Daniel Carmon

How Indo-Israel relations have changed since Modi government took over?Ans From our perspective relationship is always between two countries and not between the governments. Indo-Israel relationship is an ongoing process. I would say that visibilities of relations have been there for last 24 years but its nature has changed. We knew it was better for Indian side not to talk too much about Indo-Israel relation because it was mostly for defence and it was part of international game. If good relations with Israel would have come out in open India would have met with protest from various counterparts. But now you see that those relations if visible don’t affect other relationships.<!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Are there any big investments coming from Israel under Make in India mission?Ans Israel is already doing Make in India. As you must be aware that during Israel defence minister’s visit this year, he had announced support for Make in India in defence sector and we are trying to implement it. I cannot tell you what the other investments coming up as of now. However, our strength is research and development which is the first stage and manufacturing comes later. We are not big guys with heavy industry. However, I do see a possibility of this happening but we have to first set the stage right. Once the knowledge based infrastructure is set right the Israeli companies and businesses will know that India is a place where they should not come for R&D, exchange or transfer of technology but also to open some plants. Investments can come only if India has a very stable kind of infrastructure. What are the new avenues Indo-Israel looking forward to?Ans There are large number of areas that forms fabric of Indo-Israel relations. The four warships of Indian Navy coming under Kolkata series would have system and technology provided by the Israel. Under agriculture, Centre of Excellence is an example where farmers are being trained for the latest technologies of farming. We have established water desalination plants and are also working on water technologies. There is a diverse range of subjects that we could look forward to. India and Israel had agreed to set up a $40 million India-Israel cooperation Fund to promote joint scientific and technological collaborations. What happened to this fund?Ans It was joint Indo-Israel fund and the two countries finance ministries were debating it. There were some problems in it and it could not be finalised. Why is Israel not in optics when we talk about pilgrimage tourism as the country has several sacred places?Ans The state of Israel not only has Jewish but also non-Jewish community. It is a Jewish state by nature but large population of Arabs, Muslims and Christians are also there who enjoy rights and obligation of every citizen. Pilgrimage tourism and voyage in the world including this part of the world is more than welcome. We are an open society. Israel is a country that enjoys millions of tourists around the world. I don’t see any problem in this. The only problem I see that we should be working in on is number of flights from India to Israel. I know it is due to technical reasons, but except frequency of flights there is no other problem. What do you think is delaying Indian PM’s visit to Israel?Ans We are on the verge of Indian presidential visit and I think it is an important and historic visit. In fact in last few months there have been several visits on the both sides. This year India’s agriculture and home minister have already visited Israel and we hope to see more such visits. We are always excited and happy to host anyone from India. As far as Modi’s visit is concerned I won’t look it as delay. In fact, I was never aware that PM Modi was supposed to come this year. However, right now our focus is on Presidential visit.

We will take a decision after going through reports and video footages.” Counting for elections held in wards of Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad would be held as per schedule, he said.A blame game has ensued between the ruling Trinamool Congress and opposition parties over violence during yesterday’s elections. The TMC “blamed” the CPI(M) for violence during yesterday’s civic election in a counter to the opposition parties’ demand for re-election to the two civic bodies alleging loot of votes by the ruling party.”The CPI(M) is responsible for the violence, it was a planned attack by it owing to desperation as it knows that it will be defeated in the elections,” senior TMC leader and state Panchayat minister Subrata Mukherjee told newspersons at the party headquarter here.Alleging that CPI(M) leader Gautam Deb, a former minister, had threatened to bring in four to five thousand outsiders for the polls held yesterday in Bidhannagar, Mukherjee said, “It is the CPI(M) which instigated violence.” TMC secretary-general Partha Chatterjee also “blamed” the CPI(M) for yesterday’s violence at Bidhannagar and Asansol. The opposition parties alleged that a large number of outsiders had been brought in by the TMC to scare away genuine voters. The opposition parties demanded re-election to both Bidhannagar and Asansol municipal corporations, alleging that votes were looted amid violence, turning yesterday’s polls into a ‘farce’.”We want repoll in all booths in the Bidhannagar and Asansol municipalities in view of the rampant corrupt practices and violence,” CPI(M) politburo member Mohd Salim said.”The whole election process has been rendered a farce. The State Election Commission has the responsibility to hold the election in free and fair manner, but it has failed in its duty,” Salim said. He also demanded re-election at Bally under Howrah Municipal Corporation alleging violence in several booths there.State BJP president Rahul Sinha, who sat on a dharna in front of the SEC office last evening, demanded that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee give up her Home (Police) portfolio, alleging that the state police force had not acted to ensure peace and fair elections.Demanding re-election in all booths of Bidhannagar and most booths in Asansol, Sinha said “votes were looted in all booths with the ruling party unleashing terror among genuine voters.””The postponement of counting gives recognition to what we have been saying about large scale violence in yesterday’s elections,” West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee President Adhir Chowdhury said.”But our demand for holding fresh elections has not been fulfilled,” Chowdhury said. The polls in these two municipal corporations are considered significant for being the last key elections in the state before it goes to Assembly polls next year. “Lal Bahadur Shastri was one of the greatest sons of India and certainly one of the best prime ministers India ever had! It is unfortunate that he passed away at Tashkent on January 11, 1966, under mysterious circumstances. Till today the truth has been hidden from the nation,” Netaji’s grand-nephew Chandra Kumar Bose said on a Facebook post.

Bose said that Shastri had promised his father Amiya Nath Bose that he would set up a proper inquiry commission on his return from Russia in January, 1966.

“Lal Bahadur Shastri had promised Amiya Nath Bose, Netaji’s nephew, in Kolkata on 23 December 1965, that during his visit to Russia, he would try to find out whether Netaji was in Russia,” Bose said in his post.

Kolkata: Transgender women here have come together this year to organise a special Durga puja in an “attempt to reclaim social space” in the face of “ostracism”.

Organised by Pratyay Gender Trust in association with a local club, all arrangements are being made by the transgender women from Kolkata and suburbs.

“Whenever we visit pandals, we are seen in a derogatory way. We are trying to end this discrimination and create scope for conversation between communities where we and our families live,” a member of the organising body told IANS.

“Every one is welcome to visit our pandal,” the member said.

They will also, apart from trying to carve a niche for themselves in the society, seek to dissolve gender disparity.

Activities that are traditionally male dominated, the theme, specifications about the idol, marquee decoration, collection of subscription, puja committee formation, will see the participation of transgender women.

Budgeted at Rs. 1.5 lakh, the celebrations will be held at Jay Mitra street (off Rabindra Sarani), near Sovabazar in north Kolkata.

The police resorted to latchicharge at Ganesh Chandra Avenue where the protesters broke barricades during the “march to Lalbazar” programme to protest against alleged police atrocity against people and their democratic rights.

A senior police officer said several police personnel were injured when Left workers resorted to brickbatting and stone-pelting.

CPI-M politburo member Mohammed Salim claimed, “Several of our leaders, including our central committee member Dipak dasgupta, were injured in the unprovoked police lathicharge.”

CPI-M state secretary Surjya Kanta Mishra said, “We told them that a Left delegation will go and submit a memorandum. But they resorted to unprovoked lathicharge on our supporters. We condemn this. We want to tell Mamata Banerjee that the people of the state will give them a befitting reply.”

He alleged that the brutal lathicharge was a proof of the barbaric and undemocratic attitute of the state administrtation.

The police said that they were forced to resort to lathicharge when attacked by the demonstrators in which some police personnel received injuries.

“More than 50 police personal were injured in the attack by the protestors. We are awaiting further reports,” a senior police officer said.

Several of the injured, including women and the elderly, were admitted to nearby hospitals.

The Left’s march to Lalbazar was organised within a month after a march to the state secretariat at Howrah which had also witnessed violence and September 2 general strike. The Left Front organised the march from three points in the metropolis, one from Dorina Crossing led by opposition leader Surya Kanta Mishra while Left Front chairman Biman Bose led the march from Ganesh Chandra Avenue.

Md Salim, CPI-M politburo member, led the march from College Street.

The police, along with officials of the Rapid Action Force, lathicharged protesters at Ganesh Chandra Avenue when they broke two of the three barricades.

The protesters were seen throwing rotten eggs towards the police barricade.

A few mediapersons also received injuries during the clash.

“More than 200 of our supporters have been injured today during the lathicharge. We were protesting peacefully, we wanted to go to Lalbazaar, but we were stopped,” Left Front chairman Biman Bose told PTI.

The TMC leaderership rubbished the allegations and said that the Left was trying to disturb the peaceful atmosphere of the state.

“They have lost all connect with the masses and that is why they are trying to disturb the peaceful atmosphere of the state. The more they resort to hooliganism the more they will be detached from the masses,” a senior TMC leader said.

Meanwhile, Kolkata Police Special Additional and Joint Commissioner of Police (HQ) Rajeev Mishra claimed that it was Left supporters who started pelting stones and attacked police personnel with sticks holding flags.

“And it was after that the police chased them,” Mishra said, adding that around 15 policemen were badly injured in the clash with the Left supporters on Thursday.
