Free Speech Debate: Taslima Nasreen accuses Mamata Banerjee of appeasing Muslim fanatics

Nasreen has also claimed in the past that seculars had double standards, when it came to supporting freedom of speech.

Taslima Nasreen and Mamata Banerjee

On Saturday, author Taslima Nasreen tweeted: “My serial was banned by Mamata Banerjee to appease Muslim fanatics. Didn’t see any secular conscience awake.”What she is referring to is to, is an incident in 2013, when a serial based on her writings was banned by the West Bengal government. Titled Dusahobas, the show was pulled after some minority religious groups objected to its screening. While people like Sujato Bhadra, Mahasweta Devi, Shankha Ghosh and Joy Goswami did speak up against the ban, there wasn’t a national debate around the freedom of speech and expression that we see these days.Activist Sujato Bhadra was quoted saying: “”How can a serial which has obtained a censor certificate be forced to be withdrawn? Surana in her letter has written that she was forced to do so because a senior police officer threatened action if the serial was telecast and anything untoward happened.”Recently, Taslima Nasreen had claimed that most secularists were biased towards Muslims and anti-Hindu. She claimed that a majority of Indian intellectuals didn’t speak up when Muslim fanatics attacked her. She claimed that Indian authors kept mum when she had to fight to live in India, and even supported the ban on her book. She had said: “Many writers are guilty of double standards when it comes to dissent. Most secular people are pro-Muslims and anti-Hindu. They protest against the acts of Hindu fundamentalists and defend the heinous acts of Muslim fundamentalists.”
