Grimmer details of Dadri lynching emerge, meat found from Mohamad Akhlaq’s home was goat’s

However police refused to comment whether or not Shivam had actually retrieved any mutton from the drain. While filing a charge sheet in Dadri lynching case, police had ruled out conspiracy angle into the murder. The move can prove it difficult for the victim’s counsel or prosecution to establish murder charges (302) against any specific person or persons as the chargesheet has not invoked conspiracy charges. It is yet to be confirmed whether or not any meat was recovered by the accused at all as it could put light on whether the entire incident was a pre-planned conspiracy.

She said that she has written to ask for three bogies in longer trains and two in smaller ones. “Another scheme I really want to see take off is free bus passes for women over 60,” she said.

AAP v/s Jaitley: Is FM putting pressure on media to not run DDCA story against him, asks Ashutosh

In another tweet, Ashutosh said, “Last night a very senior journalist told me JAITLEY is calling all the media owners, putting pressure not to run the story against him?”

Intensifying their tirade against Finance Minister Arun Jaitley over his alleged involvement in the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) ‘irregularities’, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday questioned if minister is putting pressure on media.Taking to micro-blogging site, AAP leader Ashutosh said, “Today is test for ‘M’ for Media and ‘J’ for journalism. Will media call names to Jaitley, the way it called names to Rajendra Kumar?. Media has called Rajendra Kumar Corrupt. Will media also call Jaitley corrupt after expose.”<!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>In another tweet, Ashutosh said, “Last night a very senior journalist told me JAITLEY is calling all the media owners, putting pressure not to run the story against him?”The AAP has also demanded Jaitley’s resignation and said the party will divulge details of the DDCA irregularities, which will enable you to draw a complete picture of irregularities.Meanwhile, the DDCA has strongly refuted allegations of “gross financial irregularities” against Finance Minister and its former president Arun Jaitley, saying that such charges were “absolutely rubbish”.”Some allegations have been raised against DDCA and it needs clarification as everyone is stating their point. First thing is allegation of irregularities on stadium construction. Stadium is made of Rs 141 crore,” DDCA working president Chetan Chauhan said.On his part, Jaitley dismissed the allegations as “vague” and said he cannot answer them unless they are specific. He also attacked the AAP and its government of trying to “deflect” attention from the issue of corruption and “interference” in the probe.(With agency inputs)

Money was siphoned off to Sheena’s bank account: CBI tells court as Peter Mukerjea’s custody extended to 30 Nov

Mumbai: A special court in Mumbai on Thursday extended till 30 November the CBI custody of former media baron Peter Mukerjea, one of the four prime accused in the sensational Sheena Bora murder case, as investigators zeroed in on financial matters as the motive behind the killing.

Peter was presented before a CBI court on Thursday afternoon after he was brought back from New Delhi, where he was taken for investigation by the agency three days ago.

The prosecution requested for additional custody of Peter as they wanted to probe the money angle and also carry out a polygraph (lie detector) test on him.

Additional Solicitor General Anil Singh said the CBI has written to Interpol seeking its help for getting access to foreign bank accounts of the Mukerjea family members.

He informed the court that money was siphoned off from the INX company, in which the Mukerjea couple (Peter and Indrani) were partners, and routed to Sheena’s HSBC account in Singapore.

In this connection, a woman named Gayatri Ahuja, working in DBS Bank in Singapore, had helped Indrani open the account at the HSBC Bank there.

Peter has also informed the CBI sleuths that other accounts may have been opened in Sheena’s name by Indrani in HSBC and other banks in Singapore and Hong Kong.

The CBI contends that the Mukerjeas’ company, 9X Media Pvt Ltd, had conducted an internal audit of its nine companies in March 2009 and found substantial amounts of money siphoned off and misappropriated by the duo (Peter-Indrani), which was substantiated by reports of the Income Tax department, Serious Fraud investigation Office and the chartered accountants.

In a related development, Peter’s brother, Goa-based publisher Gautam Mukerjea, requested “the right of privacy for the family which has been shocked by Peter’s arrest and going through trying times”.

“We trust that the media recognises that this matter concerns the privacy, reputation and image of a self-made and respected individual and his family that has already suffered trauma in this case,” Gautam said in a media statement on Thursday.

“The whole family is confident of Peter’s innocence and we are in no doubt that due process will ultimately reveal this.”

“It would be best at this time that the agencies are allowed to conduct their work in an unhampered manner, without irresponsible conclusions being arrived at in the interim period by any party,” Gautam added.

Urging the media to respect their privacy while reporting on the matter, Gautam said: “We also feel that unbridled speculation in the media about Peter’s culpability apart from being hurtful is counter-productive to a smooth and fair investigation and trial.”

Peter, 59, was arrested on November 19 from his home in Mumbai’s Worli area and has been in CBI custody since then.

Among other things, the CBI contends that Peter was aware of the killing of Sheena, the daughter of his wife Indrani Mukerjea.

In August, Mumbai police had arrested Indrani, her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna and her former driver Shyamwar Rai in connection with the murder.

The trio of Indrani, Khanna and Rai is in CBI custody till 3 December.

Peter Mukerjea arrested in Sheena Bora murder case: Here are the four biggest developments

The Sheena Bora murder case took another twist on Thursday night with the CBI arresting Peter Mukerjea — media baron and husband of one of the main accused Indrani Mukerjea. He was booked under Section 201 of the Indian Penal Code, which relates to causing the disappearance of evidence of offence, or providing false information.

After taking over the case under acrimonious circumstances on 29 September, the CBI on Thursday filed a ‘1,000 page’ chargesheet in the case against Indrani, her former husband Sanjeev Khanna and driver Shyamvar Rai. It was the latter’s statement that as per Times Now reports, ‘nailed Peter’.

The man who knew too much

According to sources quoted by The Economic Times, Peter had been ‘evasive’ during his CBI examination on Thursday, which eventually led to the arrest. The sources went on to share that they suspected Peter’s possible involvement in the case after he gave ‘contradictory’ responses to CBI questions on Sheena’s murder. The Indian Express quotes a CBI official as saying, “She has given enough indications… he knew of the murder.”

Not just that. The Hindu reports that Peter not only knew about the murder but also knew for over a decade that Sheena was Indrani’s daughter. Shortly after Peter and Indrani’s wedding in 2003, a letter from Indrani’s Guwahati-based parents requesting ‘financial support for her two children, Sheena and Mikhail’ reportedly landed on Peter’s desk at work.

The money trail

A report in DNA highlights the possible financial angle in the case that may have been a reason leading to Peter’s arrest. It mentions that the Sheena murder investigation had earlier revealed that Peter and Indrani had taken a loan of Rs 87 crore, of which only half went into buying shares of INX Media Private Limited — the media house owned by the couple.

The report goes on to add that INX Media was shown in 2012 as having paid ‘one of its directors’ — which could either refer to Peter or Indrani — Rs 87 crore, which was apparently couched as a ‘loss on the share’ of the company. That this development emerged shortly after April, which was when Sheena was alleged to have been murdered, is suspicious enough, but DNA also notes that the transactions should have been portrayed as a gain rather than a ‘loss’.

Complicit cops?

Another angle that has emerged in recent months is the role of the police in the whole issue.

The Economic Times report points out that some IPS officers from the Maharashtra Police are under the CBI’s scanner, but their identities were naturally not revealed. At the same time, DNA quotes former IPS officer and lawyer YP Singh as saying, “I am not sure whether the Mumbai Police were shielding Peter, but it is clear that proper steps of interrogation were not followed even though he was under suspicion… The Mumbai police definitely will have to answer (for) it.

Is there more to the Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ remark that the police had ‘shown a lot of involvement and attention’ in this particular case, and the subsequent decision to hand the investigation over to the CBI?

Legal representation

Nevertheless, Peter will be produced in court on Friday. But who will represent him? That’s another blurry area in this extremely hazy case.

His lawyer Mahesh Jethmalani said he was surprised at the decision of CBI to place him under arrest. “I will be extremely shocked if the news about his arrest is true,” he said, and added, “I contacted him through messages and my last contact was well past 7.30 PM when he informed me that he was being questioned by the CBI and that he would contact me later.”

However, The Indian Express quotes the senior lawyer as saying, ““I was informed about Peter’s arrest by his sister this evening. I will not be representing Peter Mukerjea. I don’t know who will be representing him in this case.”

Pro-RSS journal accuses media of ‘intolerance’

It claimed that “anyone watching TV these days would think the country is in danger, societal tolerance is reducing, there s a civil-war like situation, as if there s bloodshed all around.”

It also attacked the role of the media for “overplaying” that veteran lyricist Gulzar returned his award over intolerance recently

An article in RSS mouthpiece ‘Panchjanya’ has accused the media of bias and intolerance towards an alternative point of view on a “manufactured” debate over “shrinking” space for dissent. The article charged the media with overplaying a series of recent incidents including return of awards by intellectuals and artistes and the Kerala House beef row, the article in pro-RSS publication. It claimed that “anyone watching TV these days would think the country is in danger, societal tolerance is reducing, there s a civil-war like situation, as if there s bloodshed all around.” The article said “this manufactured atmosphere created on the eve of Bihar polls would give anyone watching TV a sense of fear.”<!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>”Kerala House witnessed a controversy over beef. Police went there and sorted it out. But how could the media sit silently? By the evening, every channel was debating how sinful the police had been in visiting Kerala House upon receipt of a complaint over beef sale. Kerala House is not an embassy of another country,” the article said.It also attacked the role of the media for “overplaying” that veteran lyricist Gulzar returned his award over intolerance recently but “conveniently glossing over the fact that Gulzar had campaigned against Narendra Modi in Varanasi during 2014 Lok Sabha elections” and saying, “people have the right to know that their favourite lyricist has political affiliations.””While TV channels showed Gulzar returning the award, they didn’t say that Gulzar had canvassed against Narendra Modi in Varanasi in general elections. Isn’t Gulzar’s presence in Patna during Bihar polls strange? People have the right to know that their favourite lyricist has political affiliations,” according to the article. Accusing the media of not showing pro-government versions in the debate on intolerance, the article in the publication asked why when channels showed scientist P M Bhargava s anti- government statements and “blacked out” pro-government statements of another acclaimed scientist G Madhavan Nair.”Extremely secular journalists continue to insult Hindu traditions and have through articles mocked the Hindu festival of Karvachauth as conservative,” the article says. The article in the publication also questions the media over not being “anguished over the intolerance shown to poet Munawwar Rana who recently met PM Modi on his invitation”. “Rana is being attacked because he met PM Modi but the progressive media is silent over intolerance being shown to him,” the ‘Panchjanya’ article says, adding that the media “conveniently went silent when it was revealed that filmmaker Dibakar Banerjee returned an award he never even received”. “It was only when the producer of film ‘Khosla ka Ghosla’ revealed this truth that it became known that Dibakar Banerjee had not even received the award but the media went silent despite earlier overplaying it,” the article said, adding that the “social media is closer to the truth than the mainstream media”.The publication especially praised the role of the social media in projecting how the recent “anti-India” remarks by credit rating agency Moody s were “actually personal views of a junior analyst at the organization”.

Geeta, deaf-mute girl stranded in Pakistan, denies she is married

Media reports in India had cited residents of Geeta’s native village in Bihar’s Saharsa district saying she was married to Umesh Mahto when she was a minor.

Geeta with her family member

Amid reports that Geeta, a deaf-mute Indian girl who accidentally crossed over to Pakistan 14 years ago, has a husband and a son waiting for her at her native village, the 23-year-old has denied that she ever got married. Media reports in India had cited residents of Geeta’s native village in Bihar’s Saharsa district saying she was married to Umesh Mahto when she was a minor. The reports said they have a son, who is now 12 years old. Faisal Edhi — son of philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi — said that they talked to Geeta following the reports. “She communicated via Skype with the people she recognised as her family in the photograph sent by the Indian High Commission. They told her she was married and she denies she ever got married,” Faisal said.<!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –> “We also showed her the photograph published in the Indian media in which they claim the girl is Geeta. But when we showed her this photograph she said the girl was not her,” he said. Faisal acknowledged that the situation is a bit complicated now as arrangements have been made to send Geeta to New Delhi on October 26. “We are trying to speak to her to find out if she is hiding anything from us or misleading anyone,” he added. Pakistan and India have begun arrangements to bring Geeta back home after she recognised her family in a photograph sent to the Edhi Foundation by the Indian High Commission. Geeta was reportedly 7 or 8-years-old when Pakistani Rangers found her sitting alone in the Samjhauta Express at Lahore railway station about 14 years ago. Police took Geeta to Edhi Foundation in Lahore and later shifted her to Karachi. She was adopted by the foundation’s Bilquees Edhi and lives with her in Karachi. “Bilquees Edhi who has raised Geeta as her daughter will hopefully accompany her to New Delhi and we will like to first see the DNA tests done to confirm the family in the photograph is indeed Geeta’s mother and relatives before she is handed over to them,” Faisal said.

Helicams are remote-controlled mini aerial devices, fitted with still or motion film cameras, that are used to shoot aerial pictures or videos.

Police said that the incident was reported in the evening after a media person spotted a foreigner standing on the pavement near Vijay Chowk with a remote control in his hands.

The foreigner was operating a flying object — suspected to be a helicam — which was seen hovering around 20-30 feet above the ground, said a police official.

The media person told police that when he confronted the foreigner, he stopped the device and fled in a car that was parked near the pavement.

The media person further claimed that the vehicle had a diplomatic registration number pertaining to the Russian embassy, said the official.

The incident was caught on camera and the footage — in which the unidentified man can be seen sporting a white T-shirt and shorts — has been handed over to Parliament Street police station, said the official.

“The issue came to our notice through the media. We are inquiring into it,” said DCP (New Delhi) Jatin Narwal.

He said that a special team is studying the video footage and further action will be initiated accordingly.

Police said that it is only when the person who was operating the device is questioned can it be known whether the gadget was actually equipped with a camera and if he was taking photographs or videos in the high-security zone.

Meanwhile, following the incident, security was tightened in and around Parliament Street and several police teams were deployed in the area.

#MediaWantsRiots trends on Twitter as political slugfest over Dadri lynching continues

Since the 50-year-old man Iqlakh in Uttar Pradesh was dragged out of his Dadri home by a 200-strong mob and beaten to death after a public announcement from the local temple that the family had slaughtered a calf and eaten its meat last Monday night in Bishada village, politicians have been giving statements of all hue and colour. Not surprisingly, the issue has also kept the social media crowd busy with all sorts of comments doing the rounds.

While many politicians are appealing for restraint, ironically it is people from their clan who are offering politically and communally charged statements not allowing tempers to cool down.

Union Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma, who is also the elected representative of the constituency under which Dadri falls, had the most controversial things to say about the incident. Initially, he said that whole thing should be considered as an ‘accident’ which triggered massive protests.

BJP MLA Sangeet Som, infamous for making controversial speeches during the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots, declared, “Agar nirdoshon ke khilaf karyawahi ki gayi, to munh-tod jawab hamne pehle bhi diya hai aur abh bhi dena jante hain (If action is taken against innocent, we have given a befitting reply earlier and can do so again). We can give a reply whenever we want.” He made this statements at a temple on the outskirts of Bisara, near where the incident occurred.

Things have now reached such a point that even the messenger is now dealing with hate messages. Many have lashed out on social media, accusing the media of hate-mongering. People have criticised the mainstream media for using sensationalist headlines and acerbic reports, which further fuel the communal fire.

In the backdrop of the Dadri incident, #MediaWantsRiots trended on Twitter on Monday, with many criticising the media over their alleged role in spreading communal tension. Some journalists responded to the trend, defending  the media and instead asking people to step back and use reason.

Indrani Mukerjea ‘out of danger’, says hospital

43-year-old Indrani was rushed to JJ hospital from Byculla jail on Friday afternoon in an unconscious condition after she allegedly overdosed on anti-depressant pills.

Media magnate Indrani Mukerjea, prime accused in the sensational murder case of her daughter Sheena Bora, on Sunday regained consciousness and is “out of danger”, hospital authorities said on Sunday, two days after she was rushed from jail in a serious condition.”She is out of danger. She is now conscious. She is drowsy. When you ask her, she responds by oral command. We have just given her water to drink and she has consumed it. Her condition is better,” Dr T P Lahane, Dean of state run J J Hospital told reporters here, adding, “within 48 hours we will discharge her.”<!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>43-year-old Indrani was rushed to JJ hospital from Byculla jail on Friday afternoon in an unconscious condition after she allegedly overdosed on anti-depressant pills. “We will keep her under observation for the next 24-48 hours,” said Lahane.Wife of media baron Peter Mukerjea, Indrani was arrested by Khar Police on August 25 for her alleged role in the murder of Sheena, her daughter from an earlier marriage, in 2012. Indrani’s daughter Sheena, 24, was allegedly kidnapped from outside National College in Bandra and strangled to death in a car by Indrani, her former husband Sanjeev Khanna and driver Shyamvar Rai. Asked about the confusion over two contradictory reports, one saying she has taken an overdose of pills and the other saying this was not found, Lahane said, “these were two different tests. “There is one screening test which gives a clue as to how to treat the patient. And the other is the confirmatory test which is only carried out by the forensic laboratory. This reliable and authentic test,” he said, adding that “they have got nothing in that test.On whether the report of overdose was wrong, Lahane said, “Whatever talk of overdose there has been, we can explain it two ways. We did the MRI in which the brain was found to be normal. We did other tests on the basis of clinical findings, on the basis of which diagnosis is done”. Accordingly, suitable treatment was given to her and she has responded. And after responding to it, she is now conscious,” he said.Asked whether she can suffer memory loss, he said,”This is something only time will tell. Generally, in such cases, there are no chances and I believe that recovery is 90 per cent to 100 per cent.” Asked why was she brought to the hospital, Lahane wad, “Clinically, we thought the cause was overdose of medicines and accordingly she was treated and she has responded.Lahane had on Saturday said a report on Indrani’s urine samples from Hinduja Hospital laboratory confirmed that level of benzodiazepine–an anti depressant–was found raised.”Normally if a patient is on antidepressant drug the level of benzodiazepine in urine is 200. But the level of benzodiazepine is 2088 as per the Hinduja report. The report is positive for drug overdose. Anti-epileptic drugs has already been ruled out. The (test) has come negative. It is only the anti-depressant that has caused the thing(collapse),” he had said.

Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore has called upon the media to play a constructive role as the fourth pillar of democracy. He said that the media should disseminate news about welfare schemes and programmes of the government on a large scale so that maximum number of people can avail the benefits.Speaking at programme here, Rathore said that the media, while pointing out shortcomings of the government, should also highlight good works done by it and welfare programmes.”It is also the responsibility of the media to inform and aware people on various schemes and programmes of the government,” he said at the programme on Saturday.<!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>On Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visits abroad, Rathore said this has helped in boosting goodwill of India in international fora and that India is now seen as an “important country” in the globe.Speaking at an award ceremony, Rathore said that the government is focusing on simplification of rules for those who produce films in the country. He said that a single window system would also be introduced for providing different permission.

Efforts are underway to prepare the draft of a new education policy by December with involvement of people at the district level, Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani said on Saturday.”Till now, education policies were prepared by some persons at the national level, but people at ground level were never asked,” she said. Irani said that on how new education policy should take shape, she was holding meetings with education minister of every state and district magistrates. The HRD Minister was speaking at a conclave organised by Hindustan Media Ventures Ltd.<!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>”Till now plans were framed at national or state level. From education point of view if we prepare district-wise plan then the systemic change we want can be achieved,” she said. She said that there was a need to understand what people at the district level need.”I am going to request our institutions to revamp their curriculum and include technology learned in foreign countries in Indian institutions,” the Minister said. She said if students do not have much choice then it was natural they would think to study abroad.Irani said how education increases employability was a subject of discussion, but it should also be seen that what it means in the life of a man.”How our education increases employability has been a subject of discussion,” she said when asked about 23 lakh applicants, including PhD holders, applying for 368 posts of peon in Uttar Pradesh. She said what was the real meaning of education in life was also a matter which should be thought about.”So, for me while employability is a corner stone, it has been equally important for me as to what type of citizens we prepare,” she said.

Modi in US 2015: Flag that PM signed not national tricolour, says govt

A controversy erupted on Thursday when Prime Minister Narendra Modi autographed an Indian “flag” to be gifted to US President Barack Obama by celebrity chef Vikas Khanna, evoking sharp reactions after which the government insisted that it was not the national tricolor. Social media was abuzz with the issue of Modi signing on the tricolour which Khanna said he will hand over to Obama. Khanna had prepared the menu for the Prime Minister’s dinner with Fortune 500 CEOs last night. The chef also displayed the signed piece of cloth to the media.<!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Government spokesman Frank Noronha denied that the Prime Minister had signed the national flag and said it had not been confiscated as reported. Noronha, Director General (Media and Communication), Press Information Bureau, said in New Delhi that the piece of cloth was a work of handicraft prepared by physically- challenged daughter of the chef and the Prime Minister had autographed it on compassionate basis after Khanna and his family made a request. “The piece of cloth does not have white colour nor the wheel….It has been prepared by Khanna’s daughter with her toe and the Prime Minister was compassionate,” he said.He termed as “absolutely false” that it had been confiscated. The Indian Flag Code, 2002, states that putting any kind of inscription upon the Indian national flag is construed as disrespect to the flag. It also states that lettering of any kind shall not be put on the tricolor. The reactions in the virtual world came thick and fast as the controversy continued to rage. Asked whether the Prime Minister’s action of signing on a national flag was an offence under IPC, Congress Party’s chief spokesman Randeep Surjewala said in New Delhi, “we are not petty like BJP. We respect the office of the Prime Minister”.At the same time, he said that the Prime Minister must look within and take corrective action as respect for the national flag is the responsibility of 125 crore people, more so for the Prime Minister. “However high you may be, the National flag is above you, you should understand this,” Surjewala said.Congress leader Manish Tewari tweeted, “Has PM read Para 2.1 sub para 6& Para 3.28 of Flag Code 2002 that states lettering on National Flag is misuse.3 yrs jail under PINH Act 2003.” BJP accused Congress of “raking up a controversy where none exists” and making “irrelevent and unwarranted” comments on Modi.Prime Minister told the chef that he had done him proud by preparing an elaborate menu for his guests — over 50 top American CEOs who met him at the Waldorf Astoria hotel here.

Media glamorises rape, says BJP minister Pankaja Munde

While highlighting a recent incident, she said that in her constituency, a shameful act of a father raping his own daughter had come to light.

Maharashtra Rural Development minister Pankaja Munde on Wednesday opined that media should not give “excessive” coverage to crime against women as it instills “energy” and “pleasure” among people with a criminal mindset to try “something new.”Munde, speaking to reporters here, also said that media should understand news that tends to glamorise criminals and makes them feel like a hero. “For how long can we ensure safety of women when the criminal mindset of people in the society is only increasing? The overall condition of women, as they are being perceived is going from bad to worse. Small girls and even boys are not safe anymore,” Munde said.<!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>While highlighting a recent incident, she said that in her constituency, a shameful act of a father raping his own daughter had come to light.”When a biological father can do this, how bad can it get now? It gives them a kind of energy and pleasure to try something new and they commit such crimes,” she said.Munde further said that sensitivity of certain cases should be taken care of before reporting news. She also said that the state government will further strengthen law which deals with crime against women.”Media should realise which news tends to glamorise criminals and should refrain from giving excess coverage to such incidents,” Munde said.Latching out at the opportunity to pin down Munde, opposition Congress and the NCP termed her statements as “immature” and said that her statements should be condemned by all women.

South Indian films are technically “far superior” than most of the movies being made in north, Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said today.”I am not a film buff but I can tell you with bit of a risk that the technical quality of the south Indian films are far superior to many other films I have seen in the north,” she said at a Ficci function – Global Skills Summit 2015. She said it requires a lot of technical knowledge and diverse skills to produce an entertaining film.”You need people with all those different skills (in film industry) and it is not at all easy,” she added.<!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Referring to famous film actor Kamal Hassan, who is also chairman of Media & Entertainment Skills Council (MESC), she said, “I am glad to see that you have somebody here who himself is skills personified, who acquired skills and excelled in his own field.”Recently, ‘Baahubali’, a South Indian movie made waves for its special effects and was compared to the likes of Hollywood chart busters ‘300’. The minister said the south Indian film industry does intense work and takes risks “but that requires a lot of grilling with people”.”It is that kind of thing which is required in very industry be it manufacturing or IT every where. It is that last minute finish and acquiring of that value addition to the qualification you need which makes you a different employee from another,” she added.Further, Sitharaman said the government is taking several steps to boost skill development. She said that World Economic Forum has brought out a Human Capital Index ranking and it speaks of how countries utilise their human capital and in that of total 124 countries India ranked at 100. This ranking is “not at all something which we can feel proud about”.

Sheena Bora murder: Indrani Mukerjea ‘admits’ to her role in the crime

Indrani has “confessed” to her role in the crime, a senior police officer said without providing further details.

Indrani Mukerjea, key accused in the sensational Sheena Bora murder case, has “confessed” to her role in the crime, while her husband, ex-Star India CEO Peter Mukerjea, underwent another round of marathon grilling on Thursday even as police tries to crack the intriguing case. Indrani has “confessed” to her role in the crime, a senior police officer said without providing further details.Since her arrest late last month, Indrani had been maintaining that Sheena was very much alive and living in US. The grilling of Peter in the case continued and he was confronted with Indrani and the two other accused. The media baron, who reached Khar Police Station at 11.30 am, was being questioned till late in the evening, police said.<!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Besides his wife, Peter was brought face-to-face with Sanjeev Khanna, Indrani’s former husband and her driver Shyam Rai, both of whom have been arrested, police said. Today’s interrogation is being supervised by a DCP level officer.Peter was questioned for nearly 12 hours on Wednesday and the questioning went on till late night. Indrani was brought to the police station two hours after her husband arrived.”(Peter) Mukerjea was called again at the Khar Police Station as we are trying to corroborate his statement with that of Indrani, with whom he co-founded INX Media,” the officer said.Meanwhile, the Forensic Science Laboratory at Kalina here has begun the process of analysing the samples of Indrani and skeletal remains found in adjoining Raigad district to match the DNA and determine if the body was that of Sheena. On Thursday, police carried out a search at Peter’s flat in Worli and took away some documents and a laptop. The same set of questions given to Peter was also handed over to Indrani, who was brought in from the Bandra Police lock-up and made to sit in an adjoining room. Some of the questions posed to Peter pertained to his financial transactions, especially his investments, his share in various companies and how much money he had given to Indrani, son Rahul, step-daughter Sheena and younger step- daughter Vidhie, who is Indrani’s daughter from her previous marriage.Sheena was engaged to Rahul, Peter’s son from an earlier marriage, when she was allegedly murdered on April 24, 2012.The 24-year-old was allegedly strangled in a car and her body was later burnt and dumped at a forest in Raigad, about 84 km from Mumbai. Her purported remains were found a month later and buried by the police, who treated the body as unclaimed. For three years, Indrani told her family and friends that Sheena, who worked with Mumbai Metro here, had shifted to the US. Two days ago, a man claiming to be Sheena’s biological father, Sidhharth Das, surfaced and said Indrani and he were in live-in relationship. He claimed Indrani left him in 1989 without giving him any reason and since then he had not been in touch with her.

Okay, Arnab’s nation wants to know… but should the media run ahead of police in Sheena Bora case?

Why does Siddhartha Das matter?

The man who is purported to be the biological father of Sheena and Mikhail Bora has been tracked down by our intrepid media. He has been all over our television screens – his face sometimes hidden by a handkerchief, sometimes by a crash helmet. He was interviewed, the newspaper informs us, in a car on the Eastern Bypass in Kolkata, as if he was a whistleblower. At some point during his TV interviews, where he had little to reveal, one could have been forgiven for wondering if that was Das or just some random technician with a handkerchief over his face.

Why this kolaveri? Is Das the key to unlock the puzzle of Sheena Bora? And why is the media playing Five Find-Outers in this case anyway as if this was an Enid Blyton mystery?

“The whole country has been asking where Sheena’s father is… Why have you not come forth earlier?” said Times Now’s Arnab Goswami, castigating Das for being laggard, entirely unmindful of the fact that just because his “nation” wants to know, it does not have to be Item 1 on the police investigation To-Do list. The man by his own claim has had no relationship with Indrani Mukerjea or the children in years. He didn’t know who she had married after leaving him. If he has any relevance to the actual case it would have to be to establish a)he exists and b)he claims parentage of the children.

But in reality Siddhartha Das has been thrust into the limelight to satiate our own voyeuristic interest in the checkered love life of Indrani Mukerjea.

He basically serves to underscore three foregone conclusions:

The unbearable badness of being Indrani Mukerjea: Das’ testimony helps hammer home the image of Indrani the Heartless. Not to mention the added scandal of Indrani the unwed mother, with Das revealing how they first got “intimate” in a movie theater while watching Sheena, Queen of the Jungle. In addition, he tells us she was “money-minded. She had ambitions for a better living and the high society”. And then the clincher – if she did murder her daughter, “she should be hanged”. Indrani Mukerjea might not be the World’s Best Mother, but absentee father Siddhartha Das is hardly the poster boy for Great Dad.

Every masala story needs someone you can pound: The media likes nothing as much as its ability to get on the moral high horse. Shows owe their TRPs to being able to find someone they can hector and bully. The same shows that handled Peter Mukerjea with kid gloves came down on Siddhartha Das like a ton of bricks. Could it be related to the fact that Mukerjea is a mover and shaker in media circles while Das merely holds down a modest job in a small handicrafts company? “Prove to me you were concerned about the kids. How many times were you in touch?” thundered Goswami as if the investigation in question was about Siddhartha Das applying for the custody of his children.

We are the media and we are just so smart: The media is patting itself on the back for having beaten the police in finding Das. That’s assuming the police were in a hurry to find Das in the first place and could not have managed to track him down on their own. But in the course of its detective-work the media has seen fit to reveal Das’ modest salary. It has interviewed his current wife. And even worse it has quotes and SMSes from the owner and manager of the small company where the man works. Das says he is hiding his face to protect his identity from neighbours, co-workers and employers, but the media seems to be nonchalantly contacting all of them for their reactions anyway.  This might not be illegal but that does not mean it does not stink.

This is an ugly case and the more we learn about it, the uglier it gets. Siddhartha Das is just the latest source of excitement du jour added to the infotainment feeding frenzy. There is such a thing as investigative journalism. But that is not the same thing as jumping into the middle of the investigation. Digging up dirt in the name of truth-telling is leaving us all with very dirty hands.

Sheena Bora murder: Police to take Indrani Mukerjea, her driver and Sanjeev Khanna to Raigad spot to recreate crime scene

From Rupert Murdoch’s chosen one to Sheena Bora murder case: All we know about Peter Mukerjea

The last 72 hours will undoubtedly have taken their toll on the various wings of Indrani Mukerjea’s family. The intense media scrutiny alone would have been bad enough, were it not for the criminal charges she also faces.

But what do we know about the man at the eye of the storm presently swirling around Indrani’s ‘family’, her husband Peter Mukerjea?

Born Pritam in 1956, The Indian Express reports that he “was chosen by global media baron Rupert Murdoch to steer his ship in India”, and accordingly appointed CEO Star India in 1999. Before that, DNA reports that he worked with Ogilvy & Mather as an account director in New Delhi and London, and Needham Advertising as a regional group account director in Hong Kong, in 1993.

His stint at Star began in the same city shortly after, as sales director (India). At the time, Star India broadcast only three English channels in India: Star Plus, Prime Sports and MTV. Peter was shortly re-stationed to India, given additional charge of the West Asia market in 1996, and appointed executive vice-president in 1997.

The Telegraph recounts that the era during which Peter helmed Star India was a pivotal one in Indian television, describing it as “a turbulent phase of growth in the Indian television industry when big bucks chased mega, high-decibel programmes, which meant that every honcho was forced to lay his reputation on the line and bet his business every single day”.

In late 1990s, Peter Mukherjea was no ordinary name. He enjoyed unfettered access to corridors of power. During the Atal Behari Vajpayee regime, there was a move to take Star News off the air following the government’s decision to restrict the foreign investment in the media to 26 percent.

Peter pulled the strings and managed to keep the channel on air till he found an Indian partner.

It was in 2000, Mukerjea turned Star’s fortunes around by creating an Indian version of Who wants to be a millionaire?, in which “the stroke of genius” according to The Telegraph, was to “persuade Bollywood’s greatest star, Amitabh Bachchan, to host the programme that was renamed Kaun Banega Crorepati?”.

He developed friendships across party lines and was equally at ease in roaming around power centres when the UPA took over after 2004 elections.  He found access to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s office easy, as his stature as the country’s top media honcho remained undiminished. This enabled him to get access to Congress president Sonia Gandhi as well.

However, over time, Star India’s success contributed to ‘jealousies within the organisation’ and by 2006, Peter was sidelined. His role entailed serving as chairman, while his deputy Sameer Nair, handled day-to-day issues. The next year would see Peter hand in his resignation.

He told CNBC-TV18 in an interview published by moneycontrol, “There is nothing that is guaranteed in the world of television and loyalty is pretty fickle.” He alluded to one of the reasons for his departure by stating “it (the bifurcation of Star India into Star Group and Star Entertainment India) was a catalyst for me to actually start thinking what new opportunities existed outside Star, and perhaps the media business”.

As it turned out, that new opportunity was INX Media, which he joined as executive chairman shortly after his departure from Star India.

Even after leaving Star India, Peter continued to hog the headlines on account of his new media venture, in which he shared the limelight with his wife and INX Media CEO Indrani. Together, they formed a powerful team that launched a slew of media ventures including an English news channel, News X. They hired top journalists, including Vir Sanghavi, to run the channel.  Before the channel could take off, Peter-Indrani had a serious run in with Sanghvi and his team. Though Sanghvi left News X, the bitter feud undermined Peter’s stature.

He found himself in a completely untenable position following the economic downturn of 2008 that caused his exit from the INX.

With his mind on selling his 50 percent stake in the company — which was also financed by private equity investors Temasek of Singapore, New Silk Route and New Vernon Private Equity — he fired off an angry piece titled, ‘In TV, you need to bet your company everyday’. He wrote:

“(I)f you’re planning to venture out on your own with PE partners, my one word of advice is —  don’t.
Find a strategic partner instead.
The guys who work in these outfits are slick dicks and never seem to have enough time as very often they’ve over stretched themselves: rushing from one meeting to another and even when attending the board meeting of one, they’re on their Blackberries working on another. Clearly an undisciplined lot. Some also fall into the category of being compared to a pair of nun’s knickers — very thick, despite being MBAs from the IIMs”.

Since then, Peter and Indrani slipped into oblivion till their names once again hit the headlines in connection with the Sheena murder case.

Peter’s first wife was Dehra Dun resident Shabnam, with whom he had two sons —Rahul, who lives in Dehra Dun and Robin who is “perhaps working in England”. It was in the early 2000s that Peter was indirectly introduced to Indrani by Alyque Padamsee. Following a brief courtship, Peter and Indrani were married.

Sanjeev Khanna, Indrani Mukerjea business partners even after divorce?

Evidence has emerged that business dealings between Khanna and Indrani seemed to have continued even after they divorced in 2002.

With Indrani Mukerjea’s Kolkata-based ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna admitting to the police that he was present in the car when Sheena Bora was murdered, the police are left with a few dots to join before they can find out the motive and the killer. Now it seems that Indrani and Khanna were not just alleged partners-in-crime but also secret business partners.Evidence has emerged that business dealings between Khanna and Indrani seemed to have continued even after they divorced in 2002. Documents accessed by dna show that Indrani submitted Khanna’s photograph in documents relating to 9X Media to the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA), even though she had a 50% stake in the company along with her current husband Peter Mukerjea in 2007.<!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>However, Khanna’s name does not figure either in the list of directors or shareholders of 9X Media Pvt Ltd.Indrani and Manjula Rao were the original directors of 9X Media when it was incorporated in 2006. Rao is a well-known criminal lawyer in Mumbai and best known for defending Allister Pereira in the 2006 hit-and-run case.Rao is also a close friend of Peter Mukerjea and considers him her ‘younger brother.’ When Indrani and Peter submitted Form 32 (used to intimate the ministry about the appointment of company directors), the photograph of Rao was submitted along with other details announcing her appointment.A few months after the company was incorporated, Rao, who held 500 shares, resigned from the company. The resignation letter was submitted on Rao’s letterhead to the MCA. Mysteriously, Rao’s letterhead was attached with a photo of Khanna.MCA officials failed to confirm whether some documents that showed Khanna’s partnership with Indrani were removed from the ministry’s records. What makes this even more curious is that company rules do not even require a director’s photo to be submitted along with his resignation letter. However, Khanna’s photograph was attached to Rao’s resignation letter submitted by the company secretary appointed by Peter and Indrani Mukerjea.”I am clearly in shock. I did not know about it till I was told by you. I did not even know that this man called Sanjeev Khanna even existed. I met Indrani through Peter and later came to know that she had a girl child with Khanna in a previous marriage. I am going to investigate this myself” said Rao.The emergence of Khanna’s photograph in documents dating to 2007 in a business belonging to Indrani seems to suggest that the two were dealing with each other even after divorce in 2002. These new revelations by dna also strengthen the Mumbai police’s line of investigation that seems to suggest that Indrani and Khanna were partners-in-crime in Sheena’s gruesome murder.Khanna’s photo in Indrani and Peter’s business papers also points to money motives behind Sheena’s murder. dna had reported on Thursday how Sheena was made the repository of a huge tranche of ‘dirty money’ by a panicked Indrani in 2011, after the Serious Frauds Investigation Office (SFIO) started probing dubious companies opened by Peter and Indrani to siphon off hundreds of crores from INX Media Private Ltd.Documents accessed by dna reveal that hundreds of crores were routed through companies owned by Indrani and Peter Mukerjea. One of them — Indrani Incon Pvt Ltd – had Kolkata-based directors with an investment of barely Rs 1 lakh, when it was started in 2007, again with Indrani and Rao as directors.By 2011, when Peter and Indrani exited the ownership of INX Media, the surplus of the company had swelled to Rs 88 crore. Next year, the money simply disappeared from the books. Indrani Incon neither had any employee nor any revenue stream. dna traced one of its directors, Nikate Khaitan. On being asked about his links with Sanjeev Khanna and Indrani, he disconnected the line and never responded again. His wife Shri Khaitan was also contacted and she seemed completely taken aback when asked about her husband’s links to Khanna and Indrani.

Here’s what is known about Indrani Mukerjea:

– Indrani Mukherjea, 43, is the wife of former media tycoon Peter Mukerjea, who was the former CEO of Star India. She was part of the media industry herself as CEO of INX Media and INX News.

– The Mukerjeas established 9X Media in 2007 and she was the CEO while her husband was the chairman of the group.  9X Media was founded through two companies, INX Media Pvt Ltd and INX News Pvt Ltd. They both quit INX Media in 2009, according to Hindustan Times. The company was later sold to Indi Media.

– Indrani and Peter married in 2002, the second marriage for both of them. The two have a one daughter from the marriage, Vidhie Mukerjea, apart from other children from their previous marriage.

– Prior to her marriage, she worked as a HR professional and was part of the Reliance group, says this Tehelka report.

– A report by The Telegraph suggests that Indrani was actually the mother of the victim Sheena Bohra, and not her sister as was initially claimed, a fact later confirmed by Bohra’s brother Mikhail talking to Times Now. The father of the children is said to be someone who divided his time between Calcutta and Tripura.

Later, Indrani was married to a man who had businesses in Kolkata and Jamshedpur, the report said. The children were brought up by Indrani’s grandparents in Guwahati but moved to Mumbai after her marriage to Peter. The son works in an airline and Sheena had completes her graduation from St. Xaviers college. She was 24 at the time of her death in 2012.

– After Indrani quit her position at 9Xm, she is said to have had more or less disappeared from the public eye and spent a lot of time in UK, the The Telegraph  report said. According to TV reports, Mikhail didn’t suspect anything amiss about Sheena’s disappearance three years back as his mother had told them that she was settled abroad.

– Peter Mukerjea has said in an interview to a television channel that he was told Sheena was in the US and had seen photographs of her. He has also denied knowing that Sheena and Mikhail were Indrani’s children and had they were her siblings.

Is dirty money the reason behind Sheena Bora murder?

Mumbai police sources have confirmed to dna that they are probing whether Sheena was unwillingly made the repository of a huge sum of money, most of which were proceeds from the Mukerjeas’ sale of their stake in 9X Media Pvt Ltd, a news and entertainment company they founded in 2007.

Indrani Mukerjea

The motives behind the Sheena murder case might still be unclear, but now evidence is emerging that Indrani Mukerjea’s alleged murder of her daughter might have been influenced by dirty money deals, which involved companies owned by Indrani and her third husband Peter Mukerjea.Mumbai police sources have confirmed to dna that they are probing whether Sheena was unwillingly made the repository of a huge sum of money, most of which were proceeds from the Mukerjeas’ sale of their stake in 9X Media Pvt Ltd, a news and entertainment company they founded in 2007.<!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>The police suspect that Sheena’s refusal to give back the money to Indrani unless she publicly accepted her as her daughter led to her gruesome murder on April 24, 2012. Sources reveal that the police will be probing if Indrani parked money with Sheena after the Serious Frauds Investigation Office (SFIO), under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, started probing massive financial fraud in the sale of English news channel NewsX, involving companies related to the Mukerjeas in 2011.Documents accessed by dna also support the Mumbai police’s initial line of investigation. Company documents reveal that the Mukerjeas were operating a host of companies which had fake addresses and no substantial financial transactions to show between 2007 till May 9, 2011, when both Peter and Indrani officially ended their association with 9XM Media Pvt Ltd.Indrani and Peter had used four companies – Indrani Incon Pvt Ltd, IPM Incon Pvt Ltd, IM Media Pvt Ltd and INX Media Employee Trust – through which they owned a 50% stake in 9X Media Pvt Ltd. However, none of the four companies exist. The address mentioned by the Mukerjeas in their filings before the Registrar of Companies (RoC) was Block 16, Unit 15B, Phoenix Mills Compound, Lower Parel, Mumbai. When dna visited the address, it turned out to be a dumping place for construction materials. None of the companies have employees or any substantial activity to show in their books.dna tried to trace the Kolkata-based directors of two of the companies – IM Media Pvt Ltd and Indrani Incon Pvt Ltd. Till the time of going to the press, both of them could not be traced in Kolkata. Peter Mukerjea did not respond to calls and SMSes. The Mumbai police will be probing Indrani’s modus operandi in parking the money with Sheena and the trigger that led the mother to allegedly murder her daughter. Also read: Peter – Indrani Mukerjea saga: The who’s who of INX Media

Arvind Kejriwal gives credit to media for AAP’s electoral success

There is a symbiotic relation between the media and legislature and both have to work together: Kejriwal

Whether media’s functioning is democratic or not which is a very serious question: Kejriwal

File Photo
For the first time, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday gave credit to the media for AAP’s electoral success even as he raised concern of alleged attempts that are being made to push “agenda” in the “garb” of news that has given negative publicity to his government. Kejriwal said his government had no issues with the media and needed it “than anyone else”.Addressing MLAs during two-day orientation programme for them, Kejriwal said, “There is a symbiotic relation between the media and legislature and both have to work together. They are not two sides of the table, instead they are same side of the table. Media needs legislature as it has to keep them responsible for their work. Similarly, legislature needs media as works done by the government come to the people through media. We are blamed that we fight with media…why should we fight with media. We need media more than anyone else. If we fight with media, how will our voice reach out to households,” he said<!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>”A major share of the credit for the success achieved by the Aam Aadmi Party goes to media. Had they (media) not brought our voice to the masses, people would not got to know about us …. give votes to us. Today, media is an important institution of democracy…but within media whether its functioning is democratic or not which is a very serious question,” Kejriwal said. The AAP chief has often said that his party won the polls not because of the media, but despite it. The Delhi Chief Minister also said that before polls, the media did not take the Aam Aadmi Party seriously, but now it has entered government business, negative publicity hampers the image of the government. “…more than 99% reporters are dead honest and they are doing their job very nicely. They would work with us …. till late night and they become friends to us.”But, some reporters told us that our editor has sent them to do a negative story against us despite the fact they don’t know story. This is not a story instead it is an agenda,” he said. The two-day Orientation Programme for MLAs was today concluded in the Delhi Assembly.

Shocking details of Sheena’s murder have come to light. According to Zee Media Sources, Indrani was angry with Sheena for having a seven-year-relationship with Peter’s son Rahul.Apparently, Indrani had asked Rahul to drop Sheena at National College in Bandra which he did. Following that, with the help of her driver, Shyam Manohar Rai she forcibly took Sheena to Raigad. Sheena was allegedly murdered in the forests of Raigad and then her body was burnt. Sheena and Rahul were allegedly childhood sweethearts. The police have also arrested Indrani’s ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna from Kolkata for being allegedly involved.<!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>The murder case was first registered when the Raigad Police found Sheena’s remains in a forest following which a murder case was registered against unidentified people. Peter had claimed that he had no clue about the fact that Sheena was Indrani’s daughter and he thought that both Milkhail and Sheena were Indrani’s siblings.“Sheena and Mikhail were introduced to me as Indrani’s siblings by Indrani herself,” Peter said. “I was also told that Sheena was sent to the US for further studies (when she disappeared). I was completely in dark (about the entire matter),” Peter told Zee Media.Speaking to India Today, Peter Mukerjea said that he’d been out of the country for pretty much the last three years. He also said that he didn’t know much about the situation and he hadn’t met Indrani since all this began. He also added that his son Rahul believed that Sheena had left for the US without telling him and that the two of them lived together. She refused to acknowledge us: Indrani Mukerjea’s son Mikhail Bora”We met first time in 2005 in Kolkata and she was hesitant to accept me and my sister Sheena as her daughter in front of Peter Mukerjea. She told that I live in a high profile society and it will give her a bad name. So she introduced us as her siblings” Bora told ANI. He claimed that his mother had told him that Sheena had settled in the US and didn’t want him to contact her. He added that he didn’t pressurise because she threatened to stop her pocket money.Indrani Mukerjea was on Tuesday arrested by Mumbai Police on charges of murder. Indrani Mukerjea has been taken to Tihar jail by Mumbai Police and will stay in police custody till August 31. She was charged with murdering her daughter and disposing off her body.

In more proof of Pakistan’s support to terror activities in Jammu and Kashmir, the National Investigation Agency has intercepted conversation between Pakistan-based Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin and a terrorist lodged in Srinagar jail.Zee Media has exclusive copy of the transcript of the conversation where Salahuddin tells Manzoor Ahmed Wani, lodged in a Srinagar jail, that he would be sending money to the jailed terrorists in Srinagar. The militant Manzoor Ahmed Wani is heard asking Salahuddin to arrange Rs 3-4 lakh.<!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>The money was apparently required to hire a senior advocate for the release of nine people who are lodged in jail.Salahuddin assures Wani that he should not be bothered and that the “situation was under control”.”I have talked to the responsible person. We have undergone full investigation, made someone accountable, they will receive the payment,” Salahuddin says, adding, “This is our duty, as this case had come to my notice five days ago, along with the messages and I have the names of these people too. The fear of censorship in Indian media

Mr Modi’s government warning to TV stations over criticism of Yakub Memon’s execution is raising fears of media censorship, writes Soutik Biswas.

Journalists recount stories of assault, seek laws for better protection

Testimonies from members of the press from across the country, given in New Delhi on Sunday, thoroughly punctured any projected image of India as a democratic space that protects the freedom of press.

Fake encounter killings, jail on trumped up charges, false rape cases, brutal murders, police lathi charge that has sent one to the ICU — these are only a few examples of the violence journalists in India face from the state machinery. Testimonies from members of the press from across the country, given in New Delhi on Sunday, thoroughly punctured any projected image of India as a democratic space that protects the freedom of press. These testimonies were part of the National Consultation on Media and Law, co organised by the Human Rights Law Network. Every journalist who spoke there asked for better laws for protection of journalists, seeing it as fundamental to the safeguard the integrity of the press.<!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Easily the most frightening story was of Amar Ujala’s Samiuddin Neelu, who in 2005 was kidnapped by a special unit of the Uttar Pradesh police, driven to a remote location, made to write a suicide note while the police planned to off him in an ‘encounter’ killing. His crime was to write stories on land grab, corruption in local politics, sterilisation schemes being run as scams. He survived only because he told the police that he had written letters to the state government, the National Human rights Council and the Press Council of India, and should he be killed they would be caught. Therefore, the police chose to imprison him on charges of poaching and smuggling by planting sandalwood and parts of endangered animals. Earlier he had found out that the cops were going to entrap him in a rape case, hence he had written letters as a pre-emptive strike. The case blew up, drawing the ire of the PCI and the NHRC on the SP government and the subsequent BSP government. However, ten years on, there is no FIR, he has not been paid any compensation and his police protection has been withdrawn. These testimonies heavily implicated government machinery in the crackdown on press, as police forces in different states either assaulted these reporters or protected the men who attacked them. Uttar Pradesh journalists Vikas Kumar, Neelu, Ayan Ghoshal from West Bengal, Pankaj Varshney from Uttarakhand, Birendra Panigrahi from Orissa and Jatin Desai from Maharashtra shared either first-hand accounts or those of their peers who had died.Panigrahi narrated the incident of TK Acharya whose throat was slashed after he reported on illegal child labour in a cashew plant. Ghoshal, working with Zee Media in Bengal, was brutally beaten by a mob capturing EVM machines on polling day outside Kolkata in 2014. Same was the case with Kumar who covered the Vidhan Sabha elections in 2011, and was thrashed by SP workers, while the police, realising that the SP’s victory was imminent refused to help.No help by the police was a common refrain in these stories, leading the collection of journalists to ask for better laws for their protection, and empowerment of the PCI. As Desai said that the recent government figures of 113 cases of atrocities against the press in 2014 cannot possibly be correct, as in Maharashtra alone 50 journalists had been attacked last year. These figures, in every state, increase with each year, showing how the state gets away with direct or endorsed assault with impunity. As cries for freedom of speech and freedom of the press get hoarser, the Indian state is going the way of more surveillance, as date from Facebook’s 2014 Global Governance Requests report shows that India made 5473 requests for data and identities in the latter half of the year alone.

Radhe Maa accused of abetting suicide; police summon her for for dowry case

Radhe Maa has been accused of instigating six people to commit suicide, meanwhile the police have asked her

According to a report in Zee News, Radhe Maa has now been accused of instigating six people to commit suicide. The charges against her have been filed and the matter reportedly pertains to Gujarat’s Kutch area. Apparently, all six individuals had given up their wealth to the godwoman. Police inspector Sudhir Dalvi told ANI that the Mumbai police have served a notice to Radhe Maa and she will have to appear at Kandivili police station within four days. Talking exclusively to Zee Media, the godwoman had denied that she was involved in the dowry harassment case.<!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Speaking to Zee News reporter Ashwini Pandey, the controversial godwoman said: “The complainant, Nikki Gupta is very poor. If I have not take anything from my daughter-in-laws who belong to royal families, then why will I take money from a poor person who doesn’t have anything to eat?”When asked about advocate Falguni Brahmbhatt’s claims about obscenity, her aide Chote Maa asked the reporter to check the lawyer’s background and said, “If she (Falguni) wears a salwar-suit in court, does she wear the same clothes at her home?” Her aide added that she didn’t know who released Radhe Maa’s pictures to the public. Radhe Maa also received support from celebrities. Prahlad kakkar was quoted saying: “Why should sadhus wear rags and dreadlocks? Radhe Maa’s style makes her unique.” Talking to mediaperson on Saturday, the godwoman broke down and said that god would give her justice when asked about her involvement in the domestic violence case. She told the media, “I don’t want to say anything, God will do justice to me.”Radhe Maa’s controversiesAlong with the dowry case, she has also been accused of obscene of behaviour by advocate Falguni Brambhatt who has filed a complaint of obscenity against her. She was also banned from the Kumbh Mela in Nashik and was also pictured wearing a garish pink/red skirt and cap in pictures which were allegedly taken in Dubai.(Read: Radhe Maa’s Story: How she became a Godwoman)

Notices to TV news channels attempt to ‘intimidate’ media, says Prashant Bhushan

Bhushan also said that time had come to declare laws governing criminal defamation, sedition and some provisions under the Contempt of Courts Act as “unconstitutional”.

Activist-lawyer Prashant Bhushan on Saturday termed the Centre’s show-cause notices to leading news broadcasters over Yakub Memon’s execution as an attempt to “intimidate” and “terrorise” the media. Bhushan used the platform of a discussion on ‘Media Freedom’ at the Press Club of India in attacking the BJP-led Union government saying freedom was under “serious threat” under it.”They (government) have been taking all the illegal measures to terrorise, harass and intimidate the media. I think the time has come for everybody, journalists, activists, academicians to realise that our freedom is under serious threat under this government,” Bhushan said.<!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Unhappy with the coverage related to hanging of 1993 Mumbai blasts convict Memon by three leading news broadcasters, Information and Broadcasting Ministry has issued show-cause notice to them, asking why action should not be taken against them. Bhushan also said that time had come to declare laws governing criminal defamation, sedition and some provisions under the Contempt of Courts Act as “unconstitutional”.”Provisions dealing with ‘scandalising the Court’ under Contempt of Courts Act is also a problematic area. Whoever expose corruption in Judiciary can be convicted under this law. This is a serious threat to the free press. There is absolutely no need for this provision to exist in our statute at all. Under the criminal defamation laws, truth by itself is not a defence. Though whatever you said is absolutely true and you have the evidence to prove it, you may still be convicted for criminal defamation. This, to my mind, is enough to make the law unconstitutional,” he added.Other participants including Supreme Court lawyer Karuna Nundy and Delhi-based lawyer Apar Gupta also demanded the repealing of the criminal defamation law saying it poses a threat to journalistic freedom.”Theres is a serious threat to the freedom of both the media and individuals. Children and women are also being charged with sedition and defamation cases at many part of the country,” Nundy alleged. However, they also stressed the need to curb “media trials, convictions infront of TV cameras and biased reportage in terrorism cases”.
