Why is Western media so biased against India?

Someone who doesn’t live in India or hasn’t experienced its diversity, will never understand exactly how people from such distinct backgrounds live together with such harmony. When one sees the Western world grapple with issues like immigration or diverse religious groups, it makes one realise just how flexible our cultural system is, to allow so many people of so many backgrounds live with each other peacefully.

Escalating his attack on Modi government, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday claimed that CBI has been asked to target all opposition parties.Kejriwal, who has accused the CBI of raiding his office to get hold of a file that ‘traps’ Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, took to micro-blogging site saying, “A CBI officer told me yest that CBI has been asked to target all opp parties n finish those who don’t fall in line.”Kejriwal retweeted a post that quoted sources as saying, “Team Modi’s new strategy: If (PM Narendra) Modi has weakened after Bihar election results, the opposition has to be further weakened.”<!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>The Delhi Chief Minister’s claim comes a day after he demanded that Jaitley should resign or be “removed” from the Union Cabinet to enable holding of an independent probe into alleged corruption in DDCA.Earlier, Kejriwal said Jaitley’s assertion that AAP’s allegations against him are “unsubstantiated and non-specific” could not be treated as “gospel truth” as the charges against him were “very, very serious”.”Can Jaitley ji’s denial in press be taken as gospel truth? Very serious allegations against him. Why is he running away from investigations? If Jaitley ji were let off without investigations on basis of his press denial, then should all coal and 2G accused also be similarly let off?” Kejriwal asked in a series of tweets. However, hitting back at Kejriwal over the Delhi and District Cricket Association row, Jaitley accused him of spreading “false propaganda”, saying he seems to believe in “untruth and defamation and delivers a language that borders on hysteria”.The AAP, quoting from reports of Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO), DDCA’s internal probe committee and a Delhi Government-appointed inquiry panel, has accused Jaitley of giving “direct and indirect” consent to “massive corruption” in the cricket body.

IAS officer Sanjay Pratap Singh and his personal assistant, arrested for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 2.2 lakh, were remanded on Thursday to judicial custody till December 23 by a Delhi court after the CBI said they were not required for further custodial interrogation.Singh, a 1984-batch IAS officer of AGMUT cadre, and his personal assistant Ramesh were produced before Special Judge Anju Bajaj Chandna after expiry of their seven-day police remand and the CBI moved an application requesting the court to send them in judicial custody. Singh, who was holding the post of Principal Secretary in Department of SC, ST and Minorities, has been suspended by the Delhi government.<!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>CBI had earlier told the court that they would examine the bank lockers of Singh during the police custody and he was also required to be interrogated regarding the property papers recovered during the searches. It had alleged that the accused had demanded a bribe of Rs 2.2 lakh from the complainant and Singh had instructed that the money be delivered to his PA. CBI had alleged that out of Rs 2.2 lakh, Singh’s PA pocketed Rs 20,000.According to CBI, Singh had allegedly demanded the bribe from the owner of a firm that supplies security guards and other manpower for clearing pending bills. The two accused were arrested after the complainant had approached Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s office.CBI had alleged that the businessman, whose firm supplies peons, security guards and other staff for sundry works to various agencies, had accused Singh of demanding Rs 2.2 lakh as bribe for clearing bills for services rendered by the firm.”The complainant had recently approached Chief Minister’s Office. The CM’s office then guided the complainant in trapping the official and got S P Singh arrested by CBI red handed. CBI acted on the complaint received from CM Office,” a Delhi government spokesperson had said. Both the accused have denied all the allegations.

The CBI on Wednesday spoke to the media to address all the allegations made by AAP on Tuesday after the agency raided the CM’s Office in corruption case. CBI spokesperson Devpreet Singh said that the raids were conducted as per procedure and that the office of Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal was neither searched nor sealed. “Blatant incorrect information is being spread by certain quarters since yesterday to discredit agency with intent to obstruct investigation. CBI categorically denies having seized any material during searches which are not relevant to investigation. Seizures during searches at all places were in presence of independent witnesses,as per procedure.”<!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Singh further added, “The search cum seizure memo containing details of all seized items will be produced before the competent Court. CBI has already clarified that Office of Chief Minister of Delhi was neither searched nor sealed. CBI neither prevented nor disallowed any person in their movement to various offices in Delhi Secretariat including CM Office, except the office chamber of his Secretary, Rajinder Kumar and that of his Personal Assistant.”It is relevant in this context that earlier in case of Sanjay Pratap Singh, Principal Secy, Govt of NCT, no functionary of Delhi Govt ever contacted or was ever in touch with CBI. Entire operation of laying trap and arrest of SP Singh was conducted by CBI on its own after receipt of complaint followed by independent verification,” Singh said. Earlier, he was questioned by the CBI for about seven hours late on Tuesday night after the probe agency sleuths raided his office at the Delhi Secretariat. Kumar has been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) on charges of criminal conspiracy, and also under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act for allegedly favouring a private company in five contracts worth Rs. 9.5 crores during 2007-14.Kejriwal had tweeted on Tuesday, “When Modi cudn’t handle me politically, he resorts to this cowardice. Modi is a coward and psychopath,” sparking angry condemnation from BJP which demanded an apology from the chief minister for his “disgraceful” remarks. The chief minister has claimed he was in fact the target and that Principal Secretary Rajendra Kumar was just an excuse. A battery of BJP leaders and ministers have also condemned Kejriwal for his choice of words against the Prime Minister calling it condemnable and unwarranted and demanded apology.

National Herald case – Prove your charges against PMO: BJP to Rahul Gandhi

“He should come and give an explanation in the House, and should give the proof of what he is talking outside the House,” he added.

Taking strong exception to allegations levelled by Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi that the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) is oppressing the judiciary, Union Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Rajiv Pratap Rudy on Wednesday asked Gandhi to ‘prove his claims’. “We would ask Rahul Gandhi, if he has courage enough; if he has a standing as a leader of his political party, he should come to Parliament and give the proof of the allegations that he has made against the judiciary, the government, and the PMO,” Rudy told the media.<!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>”He should come and give an explanation in the House, and should give the proof of what he is talking outside the House,” he added.Criticising the Congress vice president for being ‘instrumental in disrupting the House’, Rudy said, “After the court has taken some cognisance against him and Sonia Gandhi, they are trying to become heroes out of their charge against them.””At the same time, they don’t have enough courage to come inside the House and say what they are speaking to the television media,” he added. “The friends of the Congress Party haven’t mustered enough courage to go down and speak in Parliament to place the issues,” he added. The Congress vice president termed the National Herald Case proceedings ‘political vendetta’. This is pure political vendetta coming out of the PMO. It is their way of doing politics… I have full faith in the legal system.”

A special court on Tuesday reserved for December 19 its order on an application by Jharkhand Ispat Pvt Ltd (JIPL) Director R S Rungta, an accused in a coal block allocation scam case, seeking to summon former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as a witness in his defence.Special CBI Judge Bharat Parashar fixed the matter for pronouncement of the order on the application which also seeks to summon former Minister of State for Coal Dasari Narayan Rao as a defence witness. Rungta’s counsel, who also sought summoning of various documents, argued that these two witnesses would depose about the genuineness of the documents brought from their respective offices that is the Prime Minister Office (PMO) and Ministry of Coal.<!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>During the arguments, the court asked the defence counsel to explain why it was relevant to summon Singh and Rao as defence witnesses in the case. The counsel argued that these witnesses would also depose about the constitution of screening committee, which had dealt with JIPL’s application seeking coal block allocation, and its power.”These files, which I seek to summon in my defence, will tell about the power of screening committee and how it was constituted,” he said.Regarding Singh, the accused has said in his plea, “He will prove the record of the Coal Ministry and the decision taken by him about constitution of screening committee and its functions and powers and would also prove the corresponding record of the Ministry of Coal.””Further, the two witnesses (Singh and Rao) named above may also be directed to be summoned to depose about genuineness of the documents being produced from their respective office (as they were holding at the relevant point of time),” the plea has said.Besides R S Rungta, the other two accused in the case are JIPL and its director R C Rungta. The court has fixed the case for recording of defence evidence on December 19. The case pertains to allotment of North Dhadu coal block in Jharkhand to Jharkhand Ispat Pvt Ltd allegedly on the basis of false and forged documents. The court had on November 21 concluded the recording of statements of accused in the case.JIPL and both the Rungtas were earlier put on trial by the court which had framed charges against them for securing allotment of the coal block allegedly on the basis of false and forged documents. The court had framed charges against the three accused for alleged offences punishable under sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy) read with 420 (cheating), 467 (forgery of valuable security), 468 (forgery for the purpose of cheating) and 471 (using a forged document as genuine) of the IPC.All the accused had pleaded not guilty and claimed trial while refuting the allegations levelled against them by the CBI. In its charge sheet, CBI had alleged that it had found in the probe that JIPL had “grossly misrepresented” a number of aspects before Ministry of Steel (MoS) and Ministry of Coal (MoC) to inflate their claim, thereby inducing MoC officers and the screening committee to allocate the coal block to them.

TERI Director General R K Pachauri, facing allegations of sexual harassment, was on Saturday allowed to enter TERI headquarters and its Gurgaon office by a Delhi court, which noted that the victim had resigned and was not associated with the institute any longer. The court had earlier allowed Pachauri to enter his office premises, barring the Gurgaon branch where the victim was working and head office here. This order was a modification of the previous order granting him anticipatory bail but barring his entry into all TERI offices.”As victim herself is not entering in the premises of TERI and no more associated with the institution, therefore, no prejudice would be caused either to the investigation agency or the prosecution if the application of the accused is allowed,” Additional Sessions Judge Raj Kumar Tripathi said.<!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>The judge, while allowing the application filed by advocate Ashish Dixit today, said “Order dated March 21 is modified to the extent that accused is permitted to enter and visit all the premises of TERI including the head office as well as Gurgaon office. Application is disposed off.”The court also said there was nothing on record to suggest that Pachauri had ever misused the liberty given to him or violated any bail condition.Seeking permission for Pachauri to enter the premises, senior advocate Ramesh Gupta said his client has cooperated in the investigation and not violated any term or condition imposed on him. He said the complainant has already resigned from the institute and was no more concerned or connected with TERI.Investigating Officer of the case did not oppose the plea of Pachauri and said the investigation in the case was almost complete and final report, on conclusion of the probe, was likely to be filed in the court very soon. The complainant had on November 2 resigned from her post in TERI alleging she was being treated in the “worst possible manner” by the institute, a charge denied by the organisation as “completely false and baseless”.The application said Pachauri was facing “tremendous hardship” in effectively fulfilling his duties as the Director General of TERI as majority of the employees were posted in the head office in South Delhi.”All research facilities, laboratories etc are situated in the Head Office complex. Therefore, Pachauri’s presence in those premises is extremely crucial for proper functioning and supervision by CEO/Director General of TERI,” the plea said.It said the investigation has been pending for last nine months and there was no progress in the matter as the police has not questioned him since July 17.On February 13, an FIR was registered against Pachauri on charges of sexual harassment under IPC sections 354, 354(a), 354(d) (molestation) and 506 (criminal intimidation). TERI governing council had on July 23 appointed Dr Ajay Mathur, currently the director general of Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), as its Director General. Pachauri had also stepped down from United Nations’ IPCC and Prime Minister’s Council on Climate Change.

Mr Rahul Gandhi, please tick your answer: Did you apply for British passport at any stage? Yes/No

How difficult is it really to go through official channels and find out if Rahul Gandhi was ever British? It literally is just a case of picking up the phone and making a call, rather than waving pieces of privately-acquired paper around.

We have a massive High Commission functioning in London.

We have 1.6 million Indians in the UK — working in government, media and even the intelligence services. By that token, we have our own intelligence services working across the globe.

We have Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is good chums with his counterpart David Cameron, and three days ago we saw tangible evidence of that friendship.

Both nations are members of the Commonwealth and share information.

File image of Rahul Gandhi. PTI

File image of Rahul Gandhi. PTI

In this hi-tech age nothing is secret.

Surely, all it needs is one call to the UK Foreign Office to get confirmation about whether this accusation against Rahul applying for British citizenship has any merit. This is the number of the Foreign Office on King Charles Street: +44 20 7270 3000.

They are closed now but will reopen in the morning (GMT). Give them a call.

If the UK government issued him a passport or can show an application under his signature, he is toast. Dump him, make him pay the penalty, whatever the law says. The paper trail will be thick and impossible to cover up. He is the son of a former Prime Minister of India and with the BJP in the current bilateral flow of affection, even the Brits would be hard-placed to wipe away the trail.

Let’s go a step further. Where were our agencies these 10 years of which we can for the sake of argument, concede that the Congress strong-armed Whitehall into submission, but the BJP has been in command for 18 months and it’s only now that this comes up.

You cannot get a visa to the UK as an Indian without jumping through multi-coloured hoops and doing the most humiliating Q and As possible, and we are to believe that this guy strolled in and got British citizenship, and the whole of the Indian administrative system never had a clue?

Try getting a British passport. Half the guys working there in the passport services are Indian and no one said, “Uh-oh, isn’t this that Rahul Gandhi fellow?”.

There is no mystery, no great intrigue. Either he did or he didn’t apply for a document that made him a British passport holder. Even the Mohamed al-Fayed couldn’t get one, and he owned Harrods… and his son was dating Princess Diana.

Does Subramaniam Swamy have any idea how vicious the tabloid press is in the UK? And does he really think they would pass up a story like this for a decade and nobody would know? Heathrow probably has more Indians in the airport than Delhi, if you get the drift.

Throw the book at Rahul by just demanding, not asking, but demanding an answer. Summon the British High Commissioner to the External Affairs Ministry and ask for an official clarification. Is that so difficult? You should get an answer in a day.

Ask Rahul directly. He is on Indian soil, so what’s the problem? Besides, he loves microphones.

Having his name on some company document without legal or official declaration is not evidence and that is plain common sense.

When you can print currency, what is the big deal in producing some company document with wrong information?

That said, there is one area of grey. That striking out of the nationality from ‘British’ to a handwritten ‘Indian’ is odd. And clumsy. And foolish. And amateurish.

Surely, if Rahul was guilty someone on his side would have had the common sense not to be so obviously stupid.

What it boils down to is simply finding out the answer officially and ending this speculation:

Attn: Rahul Gandhi
Did you at any stage apply for a British passport? Yes/No
Have you ever filled in any form requesting British citizenship? Yes/No
Were you, at any time a British passport holder? Yes/No
Have you ever been abroad from India on any passport besides an Indian one? Yes/No
Have you ever been rejected by the British government in an application to be a British citizen? Yes/No

Frankly, I would be a lot more concerned about about Mani Shankar Aiyer and his mouthings in Pakistan.

Post Chikki row, new policy on item purchase in place, says Bombay HC told

As per the policy, the process of e-tendering has been made compulsory for any and every purchase.

He added that before any purchase is made prior approval of the state government is a must.

In view of allegations that sub-standard ‘chikki’ was supplied to government schools in Maharashtra, the state today told the Bombay High Court that a new policy has been formed which sets out procedures to be followed before purchasing such items. Advocate General Shrihari Aney informed a division bench of justices V M Kanade and Revati Mohite Dere that a government resolution dated October 30 has been issued setting up a policy ‘Manual of Office Procedure for Purchase of Stores by Government Department’. “Under the policy several categories have been formed setting out procedures that will have to be followed by the state departments before purchasing any items. Financial constraints have been set so as to reduce any allegation of corruption,” Aney said. <!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>As per the policy, the process of e-tendering has been made compulsory for any and every purchase. “If the purchase is between Rs 5,000 to Rs 50,000 per annum then e-tenders will have to be issued. He added that before any purchase is made prior approval of the state government is a must. “Proposals for any purchase will have to be submitted before February 15 every year and the same will have be sanctioned by the government before March 15. No sanctions will be given after March 15,” the advocate general said. The HC was hearing a public interest litigation filed by Sandeep Ahire and others seeking an inquiry by a retired High Court judge into the alleged Rs 206 crore ‘chikki scam’, for which Women and Child Development Minister Pankaja Munde had come under fire. The court today sought to know if any inquiry was set up by the government in the alleged ‘chikki scam’ to which Aney said no inquiry as such was ordered but the Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration had conducted checks on the quality of the ‘chikki’ and found it to be fine. The court has now posted the petition for hearing on December 10.

Global temperature rise to pass 1 degree C this year – Britain’s Met Office | Reuters

LONDONThe rise in global temperatures from pre-industrial levels will this year exceed 1 degree Celsius for the first time, Britain’s Met Office said on Monday.

That would put global warming more than half way towards the 2 degree limit by 2100 that negotiators from more than 190 countries hope to set at a United Nations climate summit starting in Paris at the end of November.

Met Office scientists said the rise will partly be due to the naturally occurring El Nino weather phenomenon this year although the effects of man-made climate change will be the main contributor.

“We’ve had similar natural events in the past, yet this is the first time we are set to reach the 1 degree marker and it’s clear that it is human influence driving our modern climate into uncharted territory,” said Stephen Belcher, director of the Met Office Hadley Centre in a statement.

Plans by about 150 countries to curb greenhouse gas emissions, presented ahead of the Paris talks, will slow the rise in temperature from pre-industrial times to around 2.7 degrees, the U.N. said last month.

Scientists say warming by 2100 must be kept below 2 degrees to stave off the worst effects of climate change such as floods, droughts and rising sea levels.

Congress, NCP attack Devendra Fadnavis over CM Relief Fund issue

The attack came even as the Chief Minister’s Office denied any wrongdoing.

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis

Opposition Congress and NCP on Saturday attacked Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis over sanction of funds from CM Relief Fund to a dance troupe, demanding his resignation and apology for the “travesty”.”Money meant for relief fund or relief for a particular unforeseen situation is used for all kinds of picadillo in Bangkok. What could be a greater travesty. “This calls for the resignation of the Chief Minister. The relief fund is administered by the chief minister directly. Why is Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif cutting short his US Visit?

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has shortened his official US visit to three days from the initially planned five, the Foreign Office said.

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has shortened his official US visit to three days from the initially planned five, the Foreign Office said, amid reports that the change in his itinerary was made over fears of protests by Imran Khan’s Tehreek-i-Insaf party. “The Prime Minister will be paying an official visit to the United States on 20-23 October,” Foreign Office spokesman Qazi Khalilullah said.”The visit is taking place at the invitation of the President of the United States,” he told reporters. A media report yesterday had said that Sharif’s US visit was initially planned from October 19 to 24. However, Sharif had to cancel some of his engagements in the US apparently over fears that Khan’s party may hold protest against him in Islamabad, as it did during Finance Minister Ishaq Dhar’s visit to New York last month.<!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>The report had said that Sharif’s October 19 visit to Chicago, where he was scheduled to address potential Pakistani-American investors, has been cancelled. Sharif will also meet Chairman House Foreign Affairs Committee, Senate Foreign Relations Committee Members and interact with Pakistan-US Business Council and US Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He will give a talk at the United States Institute of Peace and address the Pakistani community there.

Don’t need lecture on pluralism: India lashes out at Pak over protests against Kasuri, Ghulam Ali

New Delhi: India on Tuesday lashed out at Pakistan for “lecturing” it on pluralism after Islamabad expressed concern over attempts to disrupt functions of its prominent personalities, and asserted that non-practice of terrorism was central to the betterment of the Indo-Pak relationship.

“(As if) Pakistan is the embodiment of tolerance, pluralism. India does not need to take a lecture from Pakistan. If India has a shortcoming, it is capable of looking after it,” top official sources said.

The Indian reaction came after Pakistan Foreign Office said it “noted with concern attempts to disrupt functions organised in respect of prominent Pakistani personalities on visit to India” while referring to cancellation of a cultural event by gazal maestro Ghulam Ali and attempts to disrupt a function in Mumbai organised for its former Foreign Minister Khurshid Kasuri.

“There is a need to ensure that such incidents do not reoccur,” the Pakistan Foreign Office said.

However, the sources said India still remains interested in NSA-level talks as per Ufa understanding but made it clear that terrorism cannot be an instrument of statecraft.

“A lot of what has not gone as per Ufa is because of Pakistan’s domestic politics…. They are also having some disturbance. There are non-elected players in play. The dynamics of it is both complicated and less transparent.

“The issue is that there has to be a recognition that terrorism cannot be an instrument of statecraft and you cannot say it was only Gurudaspur attack, why are you overreacting or an attack on BSF, why are you overreacting.

“It cannot be a routine way. There has to be recognition that non-practice of terrorism is central to the betterment of the relationship. If they are in denial of that (that is an issue). One country cannot resort to terrorism as a way of pressurising the other. It is not asking for too much,” they said.

On Pakistan leaders meeting Kashmiri separatist Hurriyat leaders, the sources said India has an issue if the manner of consultation or discussions or whatever way they interact with the Hurriyat was done in a manner where they are projected as a third party.

The officials sources also maintained that India was “open” to a meeting between its NSA and his Pakistani counterpart on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly last month but Pakistan was not “that open and that is why it did not happen”.

“There still remains interest in NSA-level talks. Even though, it (Ufa agreement) said the talks would happen in New Delhi. But India was ready to have in New York. The problem is that when another party starts conditioning it, that it will only talk if they are allowed to meet Hurriyat….

“You cannot take away the centrality of terrorism in the current state of the relationship. They did not dispute it. But obviously their domestic politics took them in a different direction from the Ufa. Politics in some countries are not played only by politicians. We were still open to having NSA-level talks and there was no lack of clarity on that,” the sources said.

It is understood that Pakistan had pushed India for a meeting between their foreign ministers as a pre-condition for talks between their National Security Advisors which was turned down by the Indian side.

The sources also asserted that it was also about whether Pakistan accepts or not that practising terrorism is an obstacle to better India-Pakistan relationship. “If you do accept it, there is logical flow out of it. If you don’t, it goes elsewhere. And clearly in New York we were not on Ufa page, so it did not happen,” they added.

The sources noted that after the release of Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, the Mumbai attack mastermind, the sentiment was that it was very difficult to have talks with Pakistan when he is walking around free there. “Therefore, we needed some kind of serious discussion on terrorism and obviously the appropriate people were NSAs,” they added.

Vijay Kumar Malhotra set to be AICS chief, archery body to benefit

According to sources, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has approved Malhotra’s name as AICS chief on the condition that he would resign as president of the suspended Archery Association of India (AAI).

Former Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president and veteran BJP leader Vijay Kumar Malhotra is likely to be appointed as chairman of the defunct All India Council of Sports (AICS), which is set to be revived.According to sources, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has approved Malhotra’s name as AICS chief on the condition that he would resign as president of the suspended Archery Association of India (AAI).Malhotra’s appointment will pave the way for AAI’s return as the sports ministry had, in December 2012, suspended the Malhotra-led body after it violated the age and tenure restrictions prescribed in the Sports Code. Malhotra has served more than three consecutive terms as AAI president and is above 70 years.<!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>It is learnt that Malhotra has already forwarded his resignation to AAI’s executive committee. The body would soon become functional. I can’t say much on this topic as I am yet to hear from the PMO,” Malhotra said.Malhotra was AICS chairman during NDA’s regime in 2003 with a Cabinet rank. The AICS became dysfunctional after the fall of the BJP-led government at the centre. This time, Malhotra has to make do with the state minister’s rank since sports minister Sarbananda Sonowal is of the same portfolio with independent charge. The AICS will include four Members of Parliament, sports personalities, coaches, experts, administrators, director generals of Sports Authority of India and National Anti-Doping Agency. It will also comprise the vice chancellor of Lakshmibai National University of Physical Education, officials of sports ministry, representatives from National Sports Federations, IOA, corporate bodies and NGOs.”There AICS will be an advisory body to the ministry and it will work for the promotion and development of sports in the country,” an official said.

PM Modi running the country from PMO, not listening to party MPs : Rahul Gandhi

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Friday flayed Narendra Modi for “running” the country from the Prime Minister’s Office and with the help of bureaucrats, besides not giving a chance to party MPs from being heard.”The thinking of Modi is different. That is the difference between them and us,” he said. The Congress works for the weak and the poor, but the BJP works for select few corporates, said Gandhi, who is on a two- day visit to Karnataka to meet the farmers hit by distress. He criticised the Modi government for not fulfilling the promises he made, including on black money. “BJP government made many promises including bringing back black money. I ask which are the promises they have fulfilled in a year. What has he done for Karnataka,” he asked.Targeting Modi further, Gandhi said the Prime Minister has neglected Karnataka farmers in spite of placing their rightful demands. “The Modi government does not consider Karnataka farmers as Indian farmers. The Karnataka government is asking for help which is their right, but the central government has not given,” he said. Modi announced a package for the farmers in Bihar, but had not uttered a single word for the farmers of the state, said Gandhi, who earlier in the day visited two families of farmers who committed suicide in the sugarcane belt of Mandya district.Gandhi, who is visiting Haveri district in north Karnataka tomorrow to undertake a padayatra and address a rally, alleged that the BJP is giving a step-motherly treatment to the weak and the farmers living in states ruled by non-BJP governments across the country. On the land bill, he said the BJP government wanted to snatch land from farmers, but the Congress stalled the bill in Parliament after a sustained fight. “They (BJP government) want to snatch the land from farmers. They do not have anything but their land and this suit-boot government wants to snatch it from them, but we stopped them after they introduced it in Parliament thrice before,” he said.

Few takers for Hindi in Delhi University, teachers urge to make it compulsory

The petition, which has been floated by Ravi Sharma, an assistant professor of the language at Sri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), has been signed by over 100 teachers and has also been sent to the Prime Minister’s Office as well as to President Pranab Mukherjee, who is also the Visitor of the university.

Concerned about the dwindling number of students opting for Hindi in Delhi University, a section of teachers have petitioned the HRD ministry to make the language compulsory again. While studying the subject was compulsory in DU colleges in form of either a credit course or a qualifying course, the students have an option of not pursuing it after the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) was rolled out this session.<!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>The CBCS implementation has offered students a choice between Modern Indian Languages (MIL), which include Hindi and English, as part of the Ability Enhancement Course (AEC). According to the UGC structure, AEC now has two subjects Environmental Science and MIL/English. “It is not surprising that not a single first-year student has enrolled for Hindi classes at SRCC. The earlier system had Hindi as a compulsory subject.”Students of BA (Prog) studied Hindi for three years, while those enrolled in honours programmes in Commerce and Humanities studied the language for at least one year,” Sharma said. A few takers for the subject has also led to less work and reduced requirement of Hindi teachers. “On one hand government observes Hindi week and on the other hand such is the condition in even prestigious colleges of the country. Hindi, which is our national language, will extinguish this way because soon absolutely no one will be opting for it,” Pragya, a Hindi professor at Kirori Mal College said.Another teacher at the college and an Academic Council (AC) member Lata said, “Students have always shown little interest in Hindi. But, the situation has gone worse since choice is now in the hands of students. This has resulted in many colleges saying goodbye to their Hindi teachers.” The workload cut has left ad hoc teachers worried as they feel there is a threat to their jobs.”Many of us are worried. Due to very few takers, the workload has greatly reduced. What kind of nationalist government is this, which screams about promoting indigenous languages, but then treats Hindi this way?,” said an ad-hoc teacher from an off-campus college.

The focus of the meeting would be on declassification of Netaji files so that the mystery surrounding the freedom fighter’s disappearance in 1945 could be solved

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s kin on Monday said their appointment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been fixed on October 14 in Delhi. “We just got a mail from the Prime Minister’s Office, saying that a meeting has been confirmed for October 14 at 5 pm at his residence on the 7, Race Course Road,” Netaji’s grand nephew, Chandra Bose said. Rahul Gandhi has been found: It turns out that he was at a conference in Aspen after all

After much ado from the BJP, Rahul Gandhi has been found.

On 23 September, the Congress had announced that Gandhi was leaving for Aspen, United States, to attend a conference, but no further details were provided.

Rahul Gandhi in Aspen. Twitter @OfficeOfRG

Almost on cue, the ruling party blasted the sudden ‘disappearance’ of the Congress vice-president, referring unfavourably to his 56-day sabbatical earlier this year.

“For the last three days, the Congress is misleading the country over Gandhi’s whereabouts. The Congress has claimed that he is travelling to Aspen in the US to attend a conference known as ‘Weekend with Charlie Rose’. But we have got to know that the said conference was over in July,” BJP spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao told reporters in New Delhi.

BJP spokesman Sambit Patra called it a ‘forced vacation’ and RSS even claimed it as an escape tactic with the Bihar elections just around the corner.

But it seems like, Gandhi has been discovered. Gandhi’s Twitter handle, @OfficeOfRG on Monday morning teeted pictures of him attending a conference in Aspen.

Congress leader Milind Deora also tweeted out a couple of pictures (one even with the President of Iceland) with Gandhi from the conference. He wrote that the conference concerned ‘new media & international affairs’.

As a local newspaper Aspen Times reported, that ‘Rose and others are back in Aspen this weekend for the conference, which started Thursday (24 September) and ends Monday (28 September)’. That Gandhi’s participation in the conference was not publicly known is unsurprising.

The details of the event are generally so hush-hush that locals only realised it was taking place last year ‘Vice President Joe Biden’s 40-vehicle motorcade forced motorists to be rerouted’, the newspaper adds.

Bikram Vohra, writing for Firstpost, had previously pointed out at the absurdity of the whole situation, “It is more relevant to express dismay about the rising prices of dals and other essential commodities than fret about how he went, who lent him a plane, where he is and what is this secret cabal in Colorado where he will display his incandescent brilliance,” he noted.

Ahead of his US visit, Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani’s passport suspended

New Delhi: The passport of Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani has been suspended for four weeks to preempt him from flying to New York for an event where he was likely to have spoken against India, official sources said on Tuesday.

The government action came in the wake of reports that the hardline Hurriyat faction leader was planning to travel to New York to attend the annual meeting of Foreign Ministers of member states of Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and Kashmir Contact Group beginning September 27.

The 85-year-old pro-Pakistan leader had been issued a short-term passport for nine months in July this year to facilitate his visit to Jeddah to meet his ailing daughter Fareeda.

Earlier, his application for issuing a passport had been rejected in May after he refused to give his biometric details. As the authorities refused to issue him the travel document unless he completed the necessary formality, Geelani later relented and visited the Regional Passport Office to submit his biometric details.

Geelani’s spokesman had a few days ago acknowledged his travel plans to the US but said the Hurriyat chairman had been invited by the OIC many times in the past but could not go due to non-availability of travel document.

In Mumbai, cutting chai goes online: Tea vendors in Bandra take to internet to boost sales

Residents of Mumbai’s upmarket suburb of Bandra appear to be warming up to the idea of ordering cutting chai online. The Economic Times has quoted a tea vendor who is a part of an initiative named www.chotuchaiwala.com as saying that his business increased from 700 cups a day to 1,000 cups a day.

The initiative was launched by e-commerce platform Zepo in May last year, the Indian Express had then reported. The report quotes a marketing executive from the platform as saying that once subscribers register themselves, it receives an SMS, which it forwards to the vendor, who delivers the tea according to the order.

At present, the website gets piping hot tea delivered at five locations in Bandra- Waterfield Road, Linking Road, National College, Post Office and Hill Road. Customers can ask for a one week, two week or month-long subscription.

DNA quoted the marketing executive Varun KR as saying that the objective was to see the impact the internet could have on the unorganized sector. He was reported to have said that it was easy to convince the vendors to take part in the experiment as several of them had smartphones and were familiar with the internet.

Chai vendors are not the first example of a component of Mumbai’s unique food culture going online. In July, Mumbai’s dabbawalas launched their own website www.dabewale.com, on which people can register themselves to get their lunchboxes delivered to their offices.

The talks are expected to touch upon the sensitive fishermen issue.Fishermen from both India and Sri Lanka are often accused of straying into each others’ waters and are arrested despite both sides acknowledging the issue to be a ‘humanitarian’ one. However, the two countries also release arrested fishermen often, ahead of official visits to mark diplomatic cooperation. In March, Sri Lanka ordered the release of 86 Indian fishermen arrested for allegedly poaching in Sri Lankan waters as a goodwill gesture to mark Modi’s visit, the first by an Indian premier to this country in over 25 years. Terming cancellation of dialogue between India and Pakistan as “unfortunate”, CPI(M) on Monday charged that there were “weaknesses” in Centre’s stand vis-a-vis the Ufa agreement, which was the basis for the two countries deciding to hold NSA-level talks here.Speaking to the media, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury reiterated need for a “composite” dialogue process between the two nations to ensure de-escalation of tension along border and for “future of both the countries”.”Last time, foreign secretary-level dialogue was cancelled on same issue that some separatist leaders were called by Pakistan embassy (for talks). So, India should have had made it clear (in advance) that the NSA-level talks would not take place if Pakistan held talks with separatists. Oh no you don’t! Indian govt shortlists 1500 yoga asanas to prevent them being patented abroad

New Delhi: In a move that will help thwart attempts by foreign MNCs and individuals to get patents and trademarks on ancient yoga techniques, the government has shortlisted over 1500 asanas and videographed over 250, classifying them as “traditional knowledge” of the country.

The initiative will be a part of the Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (TKDL), a unit of Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) of the Ministry of Science and Technology, which challenges claims made at several patent offices across the globe by individuals and MNCs.

Reuters imageReuters image

Reuters image

“Our experts have identified over 1500 yoga techniques from the literature available from our ancient texts and what is available now. Nearly 250 asanas have been videographed already. It should take five or six months to complete the process, after which it can be the part of the database.

“Once that happens, any attempt to claim patent on the Indian yoga techniques practised since ancient time can be thwarted,” said Archana Sharma, head of TKDL.

Several patents have been issued in the West for various yoga techniques. Many have copyright on those.

The government decided to form the TKDL after the bitter experience of some MNCs claiming patents for neem and turmeric
in the last two decades. Getting a patent issued to a US MNC revoked for turmeric, alone cost over a million dollars in legal expenses, travel and other costs.

Following this, it was decided to form TKDL. Today its database has over 2.93 lakh medicines, their properties indicating that those have been traditionally used for cure in Ayurveda, Unani and Siddha systems. The information is also present in Spanish, German, English, Japanese and French languages.

The database is shared with the European Patent Office (EPO), United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO), German Patent Office (GPO), Intellectual Property Australia (IPA), Japanese Patent Office (JPO) and Chile Patent Office (CPO) under a “non-disclosure” pact.

“So, every time when any individual or any MNC files for patent, the major patent offices refer to the TKDL base. On our part, a team is constantly monitoring the patents that are being filed. So, we also file pre-grant opposition. There have been cases when the patent applications were crossed checked with the TKDL database and queries were raised. Following that the applicants withdrew their claims.

“Since 2009, TKDL has thwarted over 200 claims,” said Sharma.

Over the past one month, India has thwarted two attempts at patenting Indian traditional medicines, which again included turmeric.

Last month Europe’s Leading Dermaceutical Laboratory -Pangaea Laboratories Limited’s attempt to take patent on a medicinal composition containing turmeric, pine bark and green tea for treating hair loss was foiled.

The same month, India thwarted another attempt by Colgate-Palmolive Company to patent a mouthwash formula containing herb (Nutmeg- Jayaphal) extract used in Indian traditional systems of medicine to cure oral diseases, at European Patent office.

In a bid to make a watertight case against alleged Lashker-e-Taiba terrorist Sayyed Zabiuddin Ansari alias Abu Jundal facing trial in 26/11 terror attacks, Mumbai Police may secure the deposition of American-born terrorist David Headley from the US through video conferencing.According to official sources, several meetings have been held between senior officials of Mumbai Police including Atul Kulkarni, Joint Commissioner of Crime Branch, and officials in the Prime Ministers’ Office and the External Affairs Ministry, after which a proposal for securing a deposition by Headley was planned. It was not immediately clear whether the US has given the go-ahead for the deposition of Headley, who is serving a 35-year prison term in the US for his role in the Mumbai attack and Denmark terror cases, through video conferencing during tomorrow’s date at the sessions court in Abu Jundal case.<!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Mumbai Police’s crime branch has filed a charge sheet against Jundal in 2012. In its charge sheet, police said that Jundal, along with Lashkar chief Zaki-ur Rehman Lakhvi and other accused, was allegedly present in Karachi-based “control room” monitoring the terror strike in Mumbai in November, 2008.The police claims Jundal is one of the six 26/11 handlers and taught Hindi to the ten terrorists who took a boat from Pakistan to Mumbai to execute the attack. They say he also familiarized them with the landscape of the city. The three-day-long terror attack had claimed 166 lives. Jundal was extradited from Saudi Arabia in June, 2012 after Indian Intelligence agencies gave the local authorities there a series of evidences pertaining to his involvement in the Mumbai terror attack.
