Foreign hand trying to stall India’s atomic programme: AEC chief

See we have to supply uranium to our plants so if we do not make anything to process this uranium, how can we say that we will not do anything and keep quiet. The whole exercise to me is looking like an effort to slow down our programme. These types of things do not carry any meaning.

Gujarat open to idea of high-speed racing in Rann of Kutch

“We expect several thousand more tourists over the next two months in Rann. Every year we are witnessing greater interest, both in India and abroad,” added tourism minister Patel. And with ideas of high speed racing doing the rounds in Gujarat’s tourism ministry, the wastelands of the Rann hope to soon see a display of raw fuel guzzling horsepower that would set the white sands under the full moon on fire.

Rahul Gandhi needs to speak up more in Parliament: Ashok Chavan

An explanation as to why the Congress opposes certain moves will connect him directly to the people, he said. “While Sonia ji (Congress President Sonia Gandhi) prefers to meticulously plan her rally speeches as she is not very comfortable in Hindi, Rahul ji tends to take it little lightly because he is well versed with the language. This, at times, proves to be a lacunae which can be changed,” he said. He added people now tend to watch serious live debates of the Parliament and that Gandhi needs to ensure they understand the reasons behind the Congress party’s stand on various issues.

I am worried that our nation’s peace and harmony should not come to an end: Ustad Amjad Ali Khan

New Delhi: Amidst the charge by writers and artistes of “rising intolerance” in the country, Sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan on Thursday said here that he hopes peace and harmony in society is not disturbed.

“I am only worried that our nation’s peace and harmony should not come to an end. It should be maintained,” he said, adding that he has at present not thought of returning any awards like several eminent personalities have done in recent days citing “growing intolerance”.

“I am only praying to God that peace and harmony in our country is not disturbed. The younger generation must get to experience peace and harmony in the country,” said Khan, who performed today at the Delhi Classical Music Festival on its concluding day.

Khan had a few days back said in Lucknow that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should rein in errant party members, failing which peace in the country could be under threat.

A recipient of the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan honours, Khan was also awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1989 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in 2011.

Coming out in support of writers, filmmakers and artistes who have returned their awards, the 70-year-old musician had said, “They are not mad. They are pained and are returning awards to express their concern. The government should examine why this is happening.”

Emphasising the power of music to unite the world, Khan today called for more encouragement for classical music.

“I think the government should encourage more classical music. There should be more music festivals all over India to create peace and harmony, because music is a connecting force,” he said.

Pointing at two types of music — pure sound or instrumental music and the music accompanied by lyrics — the acclaimed musician said that the latter has gained more popularity because of the “manipulative power of language”.

“This (instrumental form) is the purest form of music but song or the music of language, which has words like ‘Chaudvi ka Chand’ and ‘Hum Tum Ek Kamre Mein Band Ho’, becomes popular because of the words.

“Fortunately or unfortunately, the world of words is ruling the country. Through words you can manipulate. Through words a politician loses the election. Because of words a politician wins the election. There’s an old saying that language creates barriers. Thank God I belong to the world of sound. We can’t manipulate,” he said.

The musician said he was performing after a gap of around 10 years for Sahitya Kala Parishad, which organised the festival in collaboration with the Department of Art, Culture and Languages of Delhi government.

Khan began his performance at the jam-packed Kamani auditorium here with a rendition of ‘Raag Zila Kafi’. He followed that up with ‘Raag Charu Kesi’.

Prior to Khan’s performance, Hindustani classical music vocalist Ashwini Bhide-Deshpande performed ‘Raag Deepavali’ — a mix of two raagas — Yaman and Lalit.

Butchers of UP swear against dealing in cow meat

He said that the Qureshis would not keep “roti-beti ka rishta” with such “criminals” meaning that they would not have marital or business relations with people who dealt in cow meat.

In a unique initiative which could go a long way in checking communal disturbances over cow slaughter, the Qureshi community of Muslims in Uttar Pradesh has decided to impose a complete social boycott of those who indulge in any kind of business in cow meat. Cow slaughter is banned in UP but buffaloes can be killed for their meat, as is the case in several other states across the country.Qureshis have been traditionally following the metyr of butchery, though most Muslim communities engage in the meat business in one way or the other. This is the first time that the Qureshis have taken such a decision. It assumes significance in the light of the recent lynching of one Akhlaq in Dadri (west UP) over rumours that he and his family consumed cow meat.<!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>”We will not have any relation, business or personal, with anyone dealing in cow meat,” says Shamim Qureshi, president of a body of Qureshis dominant in west UP. “We will soon form teams and co-ordinate with police and district administration officials to crack down on those who are indulging in cow slaughter and bringing a bad name to our community,” he said.He said that the Qureshis would not keep “roti-beti ka rishta” with such “criminals” meaning that they would not have marital or business relations with people who dealt in cow meat. Most of the state’s 3,000-odd abattoirs are in west UP which is also notorious for the high incidence of communal riots. Since June last year, UP has witnessed as many as 330 incidents of communal violence of which 216 took place in west UP alone.Police officials admit that many slaughterhouses in the state are running illegally but the government can do little to shut them down owing to the sensitivity of the minority community as also the political patronage this industry enjoys.”Most of the slaughterhouses are connected in one way or the other to political leaders of the SP or the BSP,” revealed a senior police official who has spent the larger part of his career in west UP. Interestingly, BJP MLA Sangeet Som, one of the main accused in the horrific September 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots, was also a director of a meat processing company, though he resigned later. It is also a well-known fact that hundreds of cows are smuggled every day into Nepal or to the north-eastern states, where cow slaughter is not prohibited, for consumption. These cows are the ones which have stopped giving milk and have been left to roam the streets by their owners.UP’s controversial Muslim minister Azam Khan perhaps made a factual statement when he said that Hindus owned and ran more slaughterhouses than Muslims. He has also called upon the Centre to completely ban slaughter of cow and buffalo in the country as many communal disturbances had been caused by the confusion over buffalo meat with beef, which is cow meat.Strangely enough, though, the BJP manifesto for the 2014 Lok Sabha election promised a National Cattle Development Board, it was silent on curbing buffalo meat exports

Away from their homeland, the Bengali settlers in this Silk City of Odisha have kept alive their tradition of organising community Durga pujas. They have been celebrating Durga Puja for the last 82 years. The first Durga Puja was started by some Bengali employees in the then Bengal-Nagpur Railway at the railway station area of Berhampur in 1933, claimed an elderly Bengali resident Surojit Sarkar.”As we had started the Durga Puja in the town for the first time, we had named it as the Adi (first) Durga Puja,” Sarkar said.<!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>According to Sushant Ghosh, president, Adi Durga Puja Committee, the Bengalis established a permanent pandal at Chatterjee lane, near Old Bus Stand to celebrate the Durga Puja.”We are celebrating the Durga Puja and other rituals since 1998 in the pandal,” Ashok Kumar Jana, a member of the puja committee, said.Besides the Bengali families, people of other communities too gathered here during the puja period,” added Sibani Roy, general secretary of the committee. She said that Durga Puja was an occasion for the get-together of Bengali families residing in the town. Around 350 Bengali families are in the town.”Even though we are celebrating Durga Puja for last 82 years, we are not alienated from Bengali culture. The priests, cooks and the artists to make the idol have brought from West Bengal. Our aim is to keep alive the Bengali tradition while celebrating the Durga Puja,” added Jana.During the festive period, children from the community are performing cultural programmes. Baul Sangeet and the songs dedicated to Maa are performed by the children, while the dhaki, the musical instrument was played by the experts from Midnapore, he added.

Punjabi poet Surjit Patar returned his Sahitya Akademi Award on Monday to register his protest against the growing incidents of intolerance and communal violence in the country. Recently, poets Jaswinder and Darshan Buttar, and prose writer Baldev Singh Sadaknama also returned their awards, taking the total number of such writers from Punjab to eight.Theatre artist Maya Krishna Rao returned her Sangeet Natak Akademy award yesterday in protest against the Dadri lynching case and the rising intolerance in the country. Two eminent writers GN Devy and Aman Sethi on Sunday announced that they were returning their Sahitya Akademi awards, joining the growing protest by litterateurs over “rising intolerance” and “communal” atmosphere, and the “silence” of the Sahitya Akademi over the killing of Kannada scholar MM Kalburgi. <!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Writer returned their awards after noted Kannada author Aravind Malagatti resigned from the Sahitya Akademi’s Common Council. On August 30, two unidentified assailants allegedly shot dead Kalburgi (77) at his residence at Dharwad in north Karnataka. On Friday, acclaimed writer Shashi Deshpande had resigned from the Sahitya Akademy, while other six writers returned their Arulu Sahitya awards to the Kannada Sahitya Academy on October 3 over the delay in the arrest of the accused in the murder of eminent Kannada writer, scholar, rationalist and academic, Kalburgi.

Sahitya Akademi advances board’s emergency meeting

Backing: Writers’ protest gathered steam with Salman Rushdie tweets in support of Nayantara Sahgal; Maya Krishna Rao returns her Sangeet Natak Akademi award

The Sahitya Akademi has decided to convene a special emergency meeting of its executive board on October 23, bringing it forward from its scheduled date in December. There seems to have been an overnight rethink on the issue as, until Sunday evening when dna spoke to Sahitya Akademi president Vishwanath Prasad Tiwari, he had ruled out the possibility of pushing it ahead. Clearly, the resignation of several of its members and the returning of awards have been building pressure on the Akademi.Since September, when Hindi litterateur Uday Prakash became the first to return his Sahitya Akademi award in protest over the murder of eminent Kannada writer MM Kalburgi and the police’s lax investigation into it, followed by that of Nayantara Sahgal and Ashok Vajpeyi earlier this month, writers from all across the country have signalled their anger at what many have described as the ‘shrinking space for cultural freedom’ in the country today and the silence of the Sahitya Akademi, an ‘autonomous’ body that promotes literature and Indian languages, by resigning and returning awards in droves.<!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>On Sunday, nine writers led by Gujarat-based writer GN Devy returned their awards, on Monday, there have been six more award returns by writers, among them Kashmiri writer Ghulam Nabi Khayal, Hindi poets Rajesh Joshi and Mangalesh Dabral, Kannada litterateur DN Srinath and winner of the Yuva Puraskar winner Aman Sethi. Kannada Dalit poet Aravind Malagatti also resigned from his membership of the Akademi’s general council.Speaking to dna, Akademi secretary K Srinivasarao, however, said that he had only got four letters of resignation or to inform of awards being returned. “We have received letters from Uday Prakash, Ashok Vajpeyi and emails from Aman Sethi and GN Devy. The other resignations I am hearing about in the media,” he said.In an open letter on independent journal Kafila, Sethi wrote that, “I am shocked by the Akademi’s refusal to take a firm stance on the assassination of scholar, rationalist and Sahitya Akademi Award winner MM Kalburgi…and its silence in the face of attacks on writers like UR Ananthamurthy, and Perumal Murugan in the past.”Meanwhile, the writers’ protest gathered steam with Salman Rushdie tweeting support for “Nayantara Sahgal and the many other writers protesting to the Sahitya Akademi. Union Minister Mahesh Sharma on Thursday had described the lynching of a 50-year-old man in Dadri by a mob, allegedly over consumption of beef, as an “accident” and said that no “communal colour” should be given to it, even as the family of the victim is planning to move out of the village fearing that it may happen again.<!– Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>”This (incident) should be considered as an accident without giving any communal colour to it,” Sharma, Minister of State for Tourism and BJP MP from Noida, said.Stirring the political cauldron, controversial BJP MLA Sangeet Som on Sunday visited Dadri and had attacked Samajwadi Party government, alleging it was appeasing the minority community and innocent people were being framed for lynching of a man over beef eating rumour.Som, who was accused of making inflammatory speeches during the 2013 Muzaffarnagar communal riots, alleged that state government was acting in a biased manner like it did during violence in western Uttar Pradesh two years ago and was shielding those who had “slaughtered cow”.”Like they had taken the accused in Muzaffarnagar riots in a plane, they have taken those who have slaughtered cow in a plane. Even when a person is killed, they have different set of rules. Sanjay Rahul Yadav was shot in the incident, but is anyone aware. Is the Samajwadi Party government colluding with him? A person from Hyderabad comes and is able to make such statements. Is it not the weakness of the government? This government is trying to appease a particular community,” the MLA said.Questioning the arrests in the lynching case, he said, “We don’t want that those guilty of murder should not be tried but the government should stop framing the innocent. With agency inputs
