BJP loses 7 out of 10 urban bodies to the Congress in Chattisgarh

In nagar panchayats, Congress’ Foharabai Meri won from Maro, Mausam Jaya from Konta and Kameshwar Gautam from Bhopalpatanam. BJP won from only three nagar panchayats of Bhairmgarh (Bijapur district), Narharpur (Kanker) and Premnagar (Surajpur) with Dasrath Sarbuliya, Bhopesh Netam and Dularbai Shandilya defeating their rivals on these seats, respectively. The party has won 88 out of 121 wards in ten urban bodies (as counting of votes is underway in Bhilai), followed by the Congress (62) and independents (21). The victory came as a relief for the Congress which lost the Mayoral post to the BJP in Birgaon municipal corporation poll held last month.

From Dadri to Yakub Memon’s death: 16 things India outraged about in 2015

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal levelled allegations of corruption against union minister Arun Jaitley, after his office was raided. He claimed that when Jaitley was the president of DDCA in 2011, he “misused” his position. What followed was blame game over various aspects of the investigations, demand for resignation and filing of defamation case against Kejriwal.

China, India dealt with border differences properly: PLA

Both sides this year have focussed their dialogue on frequent “incursions” by the Chinese troops specially in the Ladakh sector, which caused tensions at the borders. Two of such incursions happened during the visit of Chinese Premier Li Keqiang to India in 2013 and President Xi Jinping in 2014. On both the occasions, the prolonged standoffs were resolved through hectic parlays at high levels.

Karat’s comments come at a time when questions have been raised in the closed door meet of the party on lack of sufficient democratic atmosphere within the CPI(M). Earlier on many occasions disgruntled leaders have accused the CPI(M) of lack in inner party democracy and a tendency of imposing decisions from the top.

“This money will be used by the government for various purposes like waiving off school fees of children and payment of electricity bills of farmers. The government anyway has to do all these works when it declares drought,” he said. The former chief minister also said BJP’s ally Shiv Sena is “aware that Fadnavis is only a man of words and not action”, but cannot do much about it due to the “compromise” it has done with the BJP on several issues. “This has now reduced the Sena into a party that needs to compromise on issues to stay afloat. It has no relation with ‘Hindutva’ and ‘Marathi manoos’ anymore,” he said.

Modi govt a failure on all fronts, pursuing vendetta politics: Congress

“The Prime Minister has remained unmoved by agony of the Indian farmer and thousands of suicides failed to move the government to make timely and effective intervention to alleviate their sufferings. This is apparent from the fact that the Prime Minister, who is never tired of travelling, thought it unfit to visit any village or state where a large number of farmers have recently committed suicide,” the Congress spokesperson said.

IAF man seduced online – what is a honey trap?

The ISI incident (if the ISI is involved) should actually fall in the category of catfishing, a phenomenon more common on social networking sites and online dating sites, where one pretends to be someone else. Catfishing, while usually done to engage in fantasy, can also be used to commit fraud or identity theft. If we were to not engage in terminological inexactitude, we’d have to call this an instance of cat-fishing. Not that the term makes it any better for Ranjith or the others who had been ‘seduced’ online.

CPCB, a look at the science behind the air quality index

“Engineers can establish these stations, technicians can run it, but you need people who understand atmospheric science, to understand the data,” said Jakhwal. Hence, CPCB regularly absorbs students from various universities training them in their special sets of skills. With two more automatic stations being set up, their biggest asset to maintain air quality, is knowledge, said Jakhwal, which has finally made people take note of the state of affairs.Meanwhile, the honour of ‘severe’ air went to Muzaffarpur, Bihar, on Tuesday.White elephants
Scientist at the Air Laboratory for 29 years, DC Jakhwal, calls these stations the CPCB’s white elephants. Necessary as they are, each costs 1.1 crore to set up, roughly 12 per cent of that to maintain the sensitive equipment annually – eight machines for eight parameters – and depend heavily on connectivity to monitor remote areas. For now, the lab has 39 such stations across India connected to it, with Gaya joining on Tuesday itself.

I-T raids on brokerages, traders in 4 cities to check pulse hoarding

PMO officials and the cabinet secretariat had discussed with the inter-ministerial group of ministry of consumer affairs and the food ministry in the second week of December to clamp down on price manipulation. The trigger point of the raids was the failure of earlier measures to curtail prices. Sources said that the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and National Agricultural Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) failed to procure pulses on minimum support price (MSP). In Maharashtra, traders have rejected the offer of procurement agencies. Traders neither sell nor provide the farmers’ list to FCI, NAFED and Small Farmers’ Agriculture-Business Consortium (SFAC).The central government had issued an advisory to states to take strict action against hoarding and black marketing in July 2015. State governments have conducted 14,721 raids and seized 1.3 MT pulses. The government has started several initiatives to keep pulse prices affordable. Action plan documents show that pulse exports have been banned, except kabuli chana, and up to 10,000 MT of lentils and organic pulses. The government has extended zero import duty on pulses till September 30, 2016. It has also extended stock limit till September 2016. Still, there is no significant impact on prices.
