A massive earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale rocked Jammu and Kashmir leaving two people dead and bringing back memories of horrors during the 2005 temblor in the restive state.The tremors were felt at around 12.45am when people were in deep sleep. Braving bone-chilling cold, people rushed out of their homes and assembled in the open areas reciting verses of the holy Quran.Two people died of heart attacks in J&K post the earthquake. Zahid Ahmad suffered a cardiac arrest due to the shock at Gulatha Harni village in Mendhar of Poonch district in Jammu division. A 42-year-old old baker also suffered cardiac arrest as he rushed out of his home in Ganderbal district following the earthquake.”We are trying to inquire into the causes of the death of the person. We are trying to ascertain whether he died due to the earthquake or if there are other causes for this death. If it is found in the enquiry that he died due to the tremors, I will sanction the relief”, Mohammad Haroon, deputy commissioner, Poonch told dna.Senior superintendent of police, Ganderbal, Imitiyaz Parry said a man has died but police were not told about it. “We have su moto notice and have sent a police party to check out the details”, he said.This is the second time in the last three months that Jammu and Kashmir has been rocked by a powerful temblor. On October 27 a powerful earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale wreaked havoc killing two elderly women. Two army men suffered serious injuries when their bunker wall collapsed in the quake.Panic gripped the Kashmir Valley with people rushing out of their homes taking refuge on the roadside. Screams of women rent the air at a number of places as panic-stricken people prayed for safety.
